My decision to start dreading wasn't an incredibly difficult one. Most of my life has been spent doing things that most people here in small town Alabama either didn't understand or didn't agree with. It's almost like I was meant to live somewhere else. I've never even come close to fitting into anybody's mold of who they thought I should be. But my life has been one hellish experience after another all…
New dreads. twist and rip. couple days old
new to the site and new to dreadlocks. just dreaded my hair with twist + rip method about 3 days ago. had extremely straight smooth hair beforehand. they feel like theyre locking up well, it takes time and i'm fine with that, but does anyone have any hints/tips for healthy new dreadlocks? any help is much…Continue
Hello everybody. I am brand new to the dread community here and would like to introduce myself: I am a curly-haired man and am very excited to start my journey. I already backcombed 10 dreads on the side of my head tonight. The dreads seem very loose and tend to undo themselves. Any advice on how to stop this from happening, or how to tighten up the locks quicker? I heard palm rolling with salt helps them lock up. Right now I love…Continue
So I'm up to about 25 dreads now. I've been casually adding them in with the t&r method whenever my hair has started to clump together in the back.
Tonight, I'll be giving the baking soda wash a try for the first time. Prior to this, I've just been using the neutrogena anti-residue shampoo to get all the extra crap out of my hair. I'm pretty excited to give this a try, as is my scalp.
so this will be my third time starting dreads!
first and second times didnt go so well :(, going to see how they go naturally and if they need any help i little bit of tnr ;p going to see how it will turn out!
much love sakurarose <3

Tomorrow it will officially be 3 months with my (soon to be) dreads! I am just a bit concerned that they are not growing properly. They have gotten more loose and I do not know if that is normal. A few people offered to tighten them up, but I am not sure if that is a good idea. I just want my potential dreads to be healthy. If anyone has any insight or advice, it will be much appreciated! Thank you!
I just decided to start natural dreadlocks, but I dont want to mess up so I don't know if I can use the shampoo I have at home its suave Natural Shampoo, tropical coconut it says it has vitamin E. Because I'm new to this I'm a bit iffy about using it, here's the link …Continue

I have been seeing dreads more and more lately and all it has been doing is making me want them more and more. I was finally able to meet up with my friend and she gave me 4 little dreads at the bottom of my hairline. I love them so much already! I only wanted to do partial dreads, so we weren't sure how many to start with. I want several more already. I have an attachment to them. I think they are adorable and cannot wait for them to mature. I am going to toy with the idea of adding another…Continue
One of the things I've come across in the never-ending cyclical debate of who's allowed to have dreadlocks is the presumed reason, or rather, presumed excuse of white lock-heads.
That every white lock-head has the locks because it's some form of a fashion statement, or "mock spirituality".
I'm an insecure person by nature. I have severe social anxiety, depression, add and chronic physical problems that fuel these things and feed off of them in a never ending…Continue
This is day three (or four, I already don't remember). I'm going 100% natural. Is it already a little hard? Yes. But that's part of it.
Hard to not hold myself prisoner in front of the mirror. Hard to not ask stupid, self-deprecating questions. Hard to not worry about what others think. Hard to not bust out the brushes and wax and freezing sprays, and just arm myself with my…Continue
I had three dreads done about a week ago, and plan to dread the rest of my hair soon. They were kind of half backcombed and Ripped and twisted. I'm just not really sure how to take care of them.
Some websites say that I should use wax, and the woman that did my dreads said i should wax and roll them. But other websites say that wax will cause mould and dread rot.
So all in all, I'm a bit confused and would really appreciate some advice on the upkeep of my…Continue
I guess I'd better write something, rather than just lurking around!
Here's my natural/neglect experience so far - pictures are already in my albums, and I'll look at how to post them here for future entries. I stopped brushing in the second week of July, and have been washing every 3 days with BS and using ACV with EO or tea rinses. I had been no-poo for maybe 6 months already, so my hair was pretty healthy, shiny and tangle-free to start with...
Progress has been stop and…Continue
I got my dreads on June 1st. I bought rubber bands and went over to my friends house. I couldnt wait to start. I decided to use rubber bands because I was having like 5 of us doing dreads and it was just easier to section it all off. I tried to get "No damage/hurt" rubber bands but it hurt trying to take them out later so that was kinda fail. We used the twist and rip method. My friends got frustrated because they…Continue
Hey! I'm kinda new to this whole dread thing. I've been interested in dreads for a long time but a few days ago I had a really strong urge to get dreads. So I googled and youtubed about people who had dreads and about how they got their dreads…
Some people had extension, which I think defeats the whole purpose. I really dislike extension but that's just my opinion. Other's used backcombing and a crochet hook (which is the first thing I tried cos I thought it'd be…Continue

People I know call me 'extreme' and classify me an extremist for going full vegan instead of vegeterian, ovo-, pesci-, whatever. If you understand and internalize the rationale behind going vegeterian, why half-step and still munch on fish, eggs, milk, etc?? That doesn't make sense to me. Maybe all or nothing at all is extreme, but that means slave-owners would have been rational in keeping slaves "only for dangerous jobs", etc....other than the…Continue
