Dreads and labels

I guess it's just part of our nature to label things and people but sometimes it just get on my nerves. A lot of people assume things about you based on your looks and EVERY body does it.

I do not smoke weed

I am not  vegan or even a vegitarian

I am not a hippie

I am not a 'peace and love' kind of guy (piss me off and you will find out)

I am not a pro animal rights activist

I do not believe fur is murder

I did not go the…

365 days and 7 minutes ago...

Yup....1 year and seven minutes of hair knotting up like a sloth climbing a greased pole! That's basically how much patience you have to have to get the locs of all locs! Ok, let me step back a moment to clarify..... When I first started this adventure of dreading up, I made a big mistake of having expectations. Perhaps its part of my American social upbringing to the tune of being able to control personal aspects of my own life. But I attest that I have been SAVED by this almighty hair of…

Accepting my dreads for who they are

For four months of my dreading process I wore synthetic dreadlocks in my hair to make my hair appear longer instead of doing the right thing; what I should've done from the start... accept my short dreads for what they were. I feel as if by wearing those synthetic dreadlocks I've missed out on the growth of my…

Very sweaty dreads

Hey all, just joined the site tonight. No dreadies yet but just about two weeks away from them. I've heavily researched dreadlocks over the past four months and have a fair amount of knowledge to get me started.

Here's the question I can't find an answer to; I work in a steel mill where it's VERY hot and I sweat ALOT. How is this going to effect the locking process? After I get them locked, I will be away from work for around ten days for a kick ass beach vacation. But when I…

tips on maintainance for 9-10 month dreadies

Hey everyone just joined and I'm looking for some advice, I have some teen dreads between 9-10 months I've been lacking maintenance for about a month or so but I'm starting up again. I have questions tho like how can I get fuzz under control and also tighten up my roots and get ahold of my new growth.

Bad dandruff and flat roots

Ok, I'm 9 months in from backcombing and 5mths since just letting them go. I do the BS and ACV rinse and still have a really bad case of dandruff and flakey scalp. I have been adjusting how much BS and salt I mix in my wash with no effect. How can I resolve this?

Also, I haven't really noticed much change with my dreads. I know it takes a long time but ya'd think I'd see some improvment!

Some of my dreads, well a lot of them still have flat roots. Some didn't like the sections so I… Continue

Goo Gone for removing wax testimonial

So I am in the process of getting rid of the wax. i'm using the goo gone and dawn dish soap. I poured the Goo gone in a bowl while taking a shower and diluted it with water. I like to jus lay in the shower with my hair soaking in the bowl. i actually feel a difference. I mean i can still feel some wax but it definitely doesnt feel as solid. I didnt use any specific mixing ratio i kinda jus did it lol. but jus a hint make sure you really wash your dreads because I can still feel some of the…

Forever Loving Jah, A Father Misunderstood, Hope this helps someone out there

I am currently in the transition from an apartment to a home in the woods and lately have run across many people in my life who despise god, the Bible and religion. It is not a topic I seek out and it has been a recurring theme in my life as of late. I am a man of faith who has always held on to the hope of a better life even when my life was in ruins. After almost losing my arm due to an abscess from shooting heroin after my mothers life was almost taken while being sexually assaulted in my…

.. It gets very hard to not feel a tad beaten down by the world around me. I don't live a common lifestyle as it is, never mind in a part of Louisiana that is the basic opposite of New Orleans (ohhh how I love NO)... And I get tired of explaining myself. Or, maybe, not explaining myself, but why I do what I do to others.... I want to, to help them understand and educate themselves, but it's tiresome....because for every positive and uplifting response I get, there are ten more negative…

cave girl dreads

I started my dreads two years ago in june. I have made extra effort to ensure my dreads are natural. Minimal wax in beginning but im sure its washed out by now, well hopefully. Washed with Dr. B's soap bars once or twice a week. Occasional lemon juice baths in the summer sun. Because I have not shaped them precisely all the same with no loose hairs anywhere and perfect ends and no loops or crazy dinosaur shaped twists, I have a very natural look to my dreads, which I fully accept now and…

beach, beach, beach! saltwater! yes : ) my babies have tightened up and shortened dramatically. good stuff! it's pretty amazing. i've browsed through so many photos seeing dreads at all different stages of growth and i'm going through all of them! i'm glad to report i still have a happy head, still washing with baking soda and water. though not as often because it's a pain in the ass and i'm lazy. probably because  i've been to the beach often and i do wash it thoroughly every time after…

Dread Journey day 9:D

So i'm already at day nine.... it feels like a lifetime! Yesterday, i think, i went tubing. The kind of tubing where you gently float down a river for 2 1/2 hours. God it was so relaxing. Even though i was surrounded by small kids and other people, i got a few moments to look into the forest surrounding the river and the river wall thingies, and it was a wonderful experience. my hair got slightly wet, but it didn't seem to encourage or discourage dread knotting :D. Today i spent my day…

26 days into neglect

I haven't combed or conditioned my hair in 26 days now!  I expected my hair to look all frizzy and crazy but for some reason my hair has been behaving very nicely lately!  It is curling nicely and isn't poofy at all.....just been washing with baking soda and acv.  Who could have ever thought that bs/acv wash would work SO much better than any commercial shampoo I've ever used??

I am really excited because I already have like 3 or 4 little dreads forming at the base of my head near my…

Week 1 dreads

Almost all my dreads are about 6 days old now. One wash with the Dr Bronner's magic soap in Lavender so far....

I haven't used a comb in years, and my hair separates and tangles pretty good in parts but I always ran my hands through it and used conditioner. I have a hard time not playing with my hair so I figured that the neglect method wasn't going to work for me 100%. I needed to have a base foundation laid and then let nature do it's thing. So I went with Twist and Rip. I didn't…

Dread Journey day 6, i think XD

Well its day six and a lot has changed. I finally finished the rest of my head and i removed the rubber bands from the dreads to prevent damage. in most areas, the knots are still pretty loose and the bangs have been undone for the last three days :(. My head itches like crazy and i must admit, i've been doing some root rubbing to kill the itch D: but hey i hope that they will tighten up in the future... Most of my family now tell me that the dreads look good on me and my girlfriend thinks they… Continue
