What happens when you dont want your dreads past a certain length? For example, I want my dreads to grow past my shoulders but not past my ass, sort of in between. So what are you suppose to do?

splitting at the roots

Some of my dreads are splitting in half at the roots but are still conjoined into one dread! Is this normal? Should i do anything about it? Or just leave it alone?
