Profile Information

About Me
My name is Tara and I'm from Liverpool, UK. I don't really do much with my life at the moment, to be honest. I almost exclusively wear band merchandise and I'm constantly seeking concerts to go to.

I love music, movies, books and poetry, and I love to think. I'm slowly trying to learn the djembe, and hopefully more from there.
How long have you been dreading?
Since 6th August 2011.
Dreading methods, maintenance, and products used (if you currently have dreads)
In my haste for dreads, I fell into the DreadHeadHQ/KnottyBoy way, so I wasted my money buying a comb and some wax and backcombed them. Found this site like 12 hours later, got the wax out and let them do their own thing :)

I still use KnottyBoy shampoo, which is the only shampoo I have ever used that has been good for my scalp, but I'm planning on getting the stuff for the baking soda and apple cider vinegar wash, and I'll see how that goes. Hopefully well.

A Battle With My Self-Esteem

Posted on June 12, 2012 at 2:24pm 7 Comments

Well, dreading my hair has been the best thing I could've done in terms of my confidence as well as my outlook, patience, etc. It's such a cliche, I know, but it's true, it's helped me a lot. All in things I never expected it to make any difference with. That said, there's one thing it can't really help with, and that's feeling self-conscious over my eczema/sores. I have this huge, deep sore on my forehead at the moment, and I went out today and no-one even looked at me twice. It's a huge…

Combed Out Three of my Dreads

Posted on April 8, 2012 at 10:28pm 6 Comments

Most of my dreads are quite stiff, and a couple of them have hard spots. I assumed the worst: WAX. So I combed out one of the thin-ish, only half-way dreaded ones out, expecting to see the horrors of waxy remains...but no. There was literally nothing there. So I dunno why they're stiff or anything. Anyway, I decided to comb a couple more out, mostly the ones in the front/middle, because...the ones in the middle are basically forced into sections that don't feel right, and I get the feeling…

Middle-of-the-Night Thoughts on Meat-Eating and non-Meat-Eating.

Posted on March 23, 2012 at 11:28pm 30 Comments

I was just thinking today about the whole meat-eating, vegetarian, vegan thing, and I had this quite interesting thought come to mind. First of all, I'm not bashing anyone's lifestyle choice or beliefs. I think it's worthy of huge respect to make a transition into something different from how you usually live. I have Coeliac disease, and even with my own well-being as motivation, the transition to a gluten-free diet has been very difficult. So...no-one reading this be offended, it's really…

Hey Tara, no problem.  I haven't combed since 10 August, and threw my comb away a couple of days later.  The bin men are coming by this morning, so it will be gone forever.

I've completely surrendered to the journey, and it feels good and right.  It is a spiritual journey for me, not just one of  fashion (if it were for fashion, I certainly would not have chosen dreads, but a popular style that ignorant people would not judge or look down on).

At any rate, the locs chose me more than the other way round, and I am at peace with it.  In fact, I feel much better than I did after combing out 8 days of progress; that won't happen again, feeling the loss that I felt after I combed out my initial progress.

Thanks for the encouragement :)

Thank you for the Welcome and the advice....My plan was this...I was going to go to a lady who will charge me $60 to start my locs and $25 for maintenance..and I can bring my products or use hers...I told her I will bring my as soon as I found some that wont cause build-up which I did...it was between HealingHerbsbyrene.com and dreadlockshampoo.com.... I was going to go to her once a month for 3 months..then do the maintenance on my own...I wanted the parts...and I feel like I cant do that...on my own....and then I was going to rinse my hair daily with homemade tea...(rosemary/lavender/sage) and wash every 3 days/then go under my hair steamer after the washing ....and moisturize daily two times a day...with water and essential oils.....my hair is very very very dry....and wooly. So I need to moisturize....and use my hair steamer....does this sound a bit too much...??

When you r removing or lightening colour on your hair the process of doing the colour is going to dry your hair out a bit, that is what helps hair dread opposed to really healthy strong willed hair, when hair is dry under a microscope the cuticle is all sticking out and jaggered so it more easily interlocks and matts up, whereas hair in super good condition the cuticle is all tight and flat so does not cling and matt. This is why Asian people have a hard time dreading their hair as their hair is so straight and strong, so I would suggest to these people to have a colour something their hair was more pliable. In answer to your dry ends, whenever you wash your dreads you only have to wash midlength and the root area as the ends never get oily or dry skin in them, this would also help your colour last longer and stop striping away condition from the ends of your dreads, you could put a little conditioner on the ends of your dreads only, by not shampooing the ends it will make a very big difference. Shampoo is designed to strip away oil and grime so by repeatedly shampooing the ends which do not accumulate oil or grime the striping action of the shampoo is really going to dry out your dreads. If your worried about using a bit of conditioner on your dreads, just by not shampooing the ends will make a very big difference over the next couple of months. I really hope this helps you understand about the dryness of your dreads, by the look of your progress with your dreads I think just use a table spoon of conditioner mixed with half a cup of water, apply with your finger tips and thumbs and then give a quick rinse out.
Hope this helps, would love to see some more pics of your progress sometime.

Peace.

By taking some of the colour out of the ends of your dreads you have made it much easier for your dreads to dread up better. I've,e often said to people who have really straight strong hair to strip the colour out of their hair, then add a colour so their hair is easier to dread.

So happy to see you have joined my 'friends' here on DLS, just saw you on the  Knotty chat and couldn't believe you said your red colour was supposed to be temporary, you have done a real good job to get it so bright. I see it is night for you, it is morning for us here in NZ, hope your day tomorrow is a good one.

Peace.
