Just a few questions...

I have been watching a lot of videos about dreads and how to maintain them, I know I am not that far a long and just wanted to kind of find these things out now rather than later.

I did the twist and rip method to start my dreads, also I am wearing rubberbands to keep them seperated, I do know that after the first or so wash they do loosen a bit then dread up again. From the pictures that I did post can anyone tell me if they are still looking good? lol I feel like…

Can I get some help?

Today I was at a tattoo convention in my home town and a girl said to me that she liked my dreads (have only had them for a week) but said when she had dreads she used a powder to help them, and also a hemp shampoo.

I have not been using anything right now just because I have not had them for very long. Are there any suggestions on a shampoo that will help with my scalp and make my dreads smell as pretty as I feel they are looking?

Thanks for the likes and the add =~} I've been dreading for about 6 or 7 mos but I've been obsessively researching dreads for years...About shampoo I've read that using an oil-free/fragrance-free shampoo is the best way to go.

I've been using one I found at an alternative grocery store for the last 5 months and love it. When I first started dreading I had a little dandruff, but washing my hair twice a week with this shampoo totally took care of it. You might think that fragrance-free might not help your dreads smell clean, but I actually get compliments on their scent all the time...lol...They don't need to smell like perfume to smell clean =~} Some people might want to wash their hair more often or less. I just discovered my scalp gets a little itchy if I wash them less than twice a week.

Also, some tips on washing that seem to work for me--make sure to wash your hair when they're going to have a chance to dry completely, in other words not right before you're going to have to wear a hat, put your hair up, or go to bed. Also, they take longer to saturate than undreaded hair, and it's good to listen for soap bubbles (crackling) when you first get out of the shower to make sure you've rinsed them as thoroughly as possible. Soap residue=weird odors and other unpleasantness...lol...So always make sure to rinse really thoroughly.

As far as sleeping goes, I like to have more volume to my dreads. but when I'd sleep on them, they'd lay more flat the next day. So when my dreads were first forming, I would wrap them into a loose bun on top of my head. I think yours might be long enough to do something similar with a pony tail, you can also use a handkerchief to help tie them up. This seemed to also prevent any undreading or dread-merging from happening at night.

Lots of people have different ways of doing everything, but this is the best site to find lots of helpful info =~} I think a good rule of thumb is that dread-specific commercial cleaning products are almost always a scam. They tend to feed on misinformation and fear. Dreads are simple, not scary...lol...don't buy the hype =~}

And even if you're dreads start to undread---in time, they'll tangle when they're ready. The uniqueness of their formation process is definitely half of the fun! And there's no single "right" way to dread =~} Hope this helped! Happy journeys!
