Tips of dreads growing into dreads...normal?

Okay, so I don't really fuss much over my natural dreads, but there is a trend I am noticing here....nearly all of my dread tips are hooking up like a fish hook and then attaching higher up on the dread, which kinda creates what looks like a really thick elongated ball at the end of the dread. There is one in particular that it is really noticeable, and this one is also very flat, so it kinda reminds me more of a matted cat's tail than a dread. My question is, is this normal in the natural…See More

About Me
Wife and momma of five littles. Freelance writer. Vegetarian who sometimes caves in and eats meat but tries to always move towards a vegan lifestyle. Just started dreading and didn't learn about natural dreads till mine were already in. Lovin my locks and lovin my life with them.
How long have you been dreading?
1 week
Dreading methods, maintenance, and products used (if you currently have dreads)
Put my dreads in by backcombing. Don't use any products and don't do any maintenance except for washing with baking soda two to three times a week. Once in a while I use aloe vera to tame frizzies and diluted tea tree oil to help with scalp issues.

Almost a Full Month of Natural Dreadlocking

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 4:21pm 0 Comments

I spent week two of my dreadlock journey in the hospital with my son and have been playing catch up with my work ever since, but I really need to do an update. It will be short, but still and update.

I am amazed with the speed of my natural dreads. I remember seeing this site before I did tnr. I remember thinking that natural dreading wasn't for me - it would take too long. Now, here I am, newly started dreads and almost a whole month in. I have five, yes, FIVE, baby dreads already.…

Hey, I figured it would be better to take this convo to each other directly rather than jacking someones thread.  ;)

Anyhoo, my symptoms...  I guess I always had symptoms that were related to this but in January 2008 I was pretty much hit hard.

This was my first month going back to school and I was incredibly sick the whole month.  Flow visited me 3 weeks out of the month which, was highly unusual.  I gained 20 lbs, just in that month.  I also had trouble staying awake past 7ish... I would get sluggish and, sometimes in mid conversation, I would just fall right to sleep.

At first I thought it might have been exposure to something from going back to college and being around so many people.  I ended up going to the Dr and getting a full blood panel to find out it was my thyroid.  My cholesterol was pretty high too but my Dr was accurate that once on medication for my thyroid the cholesterol would start to level out.
I needed a series of blood tests to, 1) show that it was Hashimoto's and 2) keep track of my thyroid levels.  At first it was every 6 weeks for blood tests then they thinned out to annually.

Immediately after starting the levothyroxine my symptoms started to fade out.  I was able to stay up later and finish my homework, etc.  My weight started to go back down.

Recently, my cholesterol has spiked and I was put temporarily on cholesterol meds to get it under control.  I need to talk to my new Dr about the possibility of my thyroid being the cause and possibly changing my dosage on my synthroid.  Another thing I started to notice was feelings of being lost, confused and a slight lack of retention.  I didn't consider it before but now think it may be related to Hashimoto's since those are listed as effects.
