If you fear it, you will probably end up messing with your hair more than you should, which will slow down the process so much that you will get annoyed and feel like nothing is happening. But that is because you are preventing it

Don't fear shrinkage. Embrace it. Even with neglect, you will see tons of it. Dreadlocks are tangled hair. When you string of yarn and ball it up, it shrinks in length. That's basically what happens to your hair when it starts to lock. It has to get all tangled up in itself. You will probably see between 1/3 and 1/2 the original length start to disappear as they mature. Then you will see a few months where they don't seem to grow at all. Then you will see them explode with growth,
