tip:cold cold water will eliminate dandruff and dread itch! wash with slightly cool water, but rinse with cold as you can stand.
new dreadlocks
always use either a non residue soap or the baking soda deep cleanse. many recommend washing with a stocking over your head and being very gentle not to disturb knots, this may make sense in backcombed hair that tends to unravel easily. many say its not nesacary, i never did myself, and i went natural and found my hair was more knotty not less after every washing. so the use of stockings is highly debatable.
mature dreadlocks
mature dreads don't require such gentle methods, just wash as you feel you should. mature dreads are more forgiving to conditioners and residues too, but residues once building up in the dread will be harder to remove so they are still best avoided.
methods of washing
1: flat palm method- gently rub the head with a flat palm in a circular motion (no it doesn't matter which direction..lol)
2: finger scrape method- with fingertips/nails scrape the scalp around and between dreads and under the roots careful to not scrub the dreads themselves much
3: no scrub deep cleanse- using the baking soda deep cleanse simply pour the solution over your head (keep eyes closed tight) and leave it in to soak a good while. 10-30 minutes depending how dirty the hair/scalp.
after all washing techniques simply rinse the soap/baking soda through the dreads and rinse very thoroughly
soap, shampoo, other selection
1: just cause its non residue doesn't make it great. look for soaps without sls's (sodium laurel sulphates or any ingredients that don't sound natural)
2: dreadheadhq and knotty boy soaps are ok, the only thing they make that is worthwhile and not harmful, however due to theyre lies and practices of pushing harmful products many ethical dreadheads prefer to boycott them entirely.
3: dr bronners 18 in 1 magic soaps are great for most people, but should be diluted 18-1 , however in some water types it may not rinse well.
4: the baking soda deep cleanse cleans better then most soaps, eats away at any build up dry skin and leaves you feeling extra clean, plus is cheap, you most likely have it in your kitchen, and is a natural part of the environment so is not polluting.
don't use dread wax!
dread wax is pure residue, it builds up and never comes out unless you take extreme measures to remove it
wax buildup traps dirt and moisture which leads to mold and in nearly all cases dreads being cut prematurely due to grossness.

Is it still fine to use an ACV rinse after the baking soda cleanse on new dreads?

soaring eagle: since i joined the site I have been washing my hair with backing soda at least once a week. The problem I am faced with I feel many of my dreads are still pretty "wavy" and I'd like them to get nice and knotty like some I have. How do you recommend I go about doing this? Thanks for the info!
well looks like its strickly for africa n haitr type and they sell wax any site that says wax should be used in dreads i wouldnt trust they also recomend retwisting wich leads to balding so it looks like just any other dread products scam but with as natural twist..so a knottybot=y not a dreadheadhq knottyboys more natural yet sr=till ruins dreads dreadheadhq is toxic garbage
now yea naturals h better appeals to the natueraklness in you but waxres and crap still ruin locks ..so wouldnyt risk it

Comment by BekahMuffin on November 20, 2012 at 1:30pm How do you know when you've thoroughly washed out the baking soda? If it's not rinsed out enough does it leave residue? One time I did the rinse and then washed my face after with just a wet towl and white stuff that looked like dry skin was rubbing off my entire face...my skin's not that dry so I feel like it was the baking soda. And my dandruff has still not subsided..acv rinse makes me sweat vinegar, I'm super active so that's just...gross to the people around me...so are there any tips or tricks to rinsing that out more thoroughly as well?

I'vehad my dreads for about 2 weeks and my head is really starting to itch and get kinda gross. I've only really gotten my hair wet when I've been in the lake but other than that I've been avoiding getting them wet in the shower. How should I go about washing them? I've heard I can use a tiny bit of (regular) shampoo and wash them. My hair just really itches and there is dandruff/gross build up that I'm itching out. Can I use a little shampoo and wash with cold water then dry really well to keep my dreads fresh but also in tact?

So I am only about 2 weeks in with some tnr but, mostly neglect. I have been washing my hair every 4th day. It seems that my hair gets super greasy by that fourth day though cause I live in a warm climate and exercise quite a bit..... Question is should I wash more? I don't want to wash too much but, to me it feels when my hair is greasy in is not going to knot. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

What can be used for dry hair, since I started my dreads 18 days ago it has sucked the moisture out and feels so dry!?

Comment by Lisa Wade on October 9, 2012 at 7:55pm I used 1/2 cup baking soda in a gallon pitcher. Is there an oil or other ingredient that helps with an oily scalp?
maybe but what ratios of bs and water since some directions were rough estimates some exact measurements
Comment by Lisa Wade on October 9, 2012 at 4:56pm I followed the directions given...I used about 20 drops each of tea tree oil, rosemary oil, lavender oil. Filled a gallon size pitcher with water and mixed well. Poured it over my hair, let it soak about 20 min. and rinsed well. I also did the vinegar rinse. Maybe less oil next time? I don't know?
what ratios did u use ? and pour on and leave on 10 min some pp wrap a towel but whats the pint u just want to wait a while b4 u rinse
Comment by Lisa Wade on October 8, 2012 at 9:55pm So today is the first day I finally tried the baking soda deep cleanse according to the directions in the dreaducation section. Well my dreads feel completely different. They're super soft, smell great, and my scalp feels great. The only thing I'm wondering is about the more oily feel and look of my loose hairs at my scalp. How do I avoid this? I don't want my hair to look oily. Also, when it says to let my dreads soak in the solution, am I suppose to soak them in a sink of the solution or just leave it on my dreads and wrap in a towel or what? I just need some clarification so I feel like I did it right!
Comment by Kristin D. Saltsman on September 29, 2012 at 6:29pm christopher walked would agree.. and that's awesome
