1: twist and rip dreads hold together better then backcombed dreads
2: they dont look like clown dreads sticking straight up
3: they are generaly less dammaging
4: they look more like neat tidy dreads earlier
5: once you get the technique mastered they are easier and faster
they have just 2 drawbacks
1: they are harder to figure out the 1st time you try
2: they are slightly easier to do on thinner dreadlocks
how its done:
sectioning- generaly i recomend a more random sectioning between 1/4 inch to an inch in thickness (just carefull that hairs from 1 section dont cross hairs from another at the roots) you can do a more even sectioning if you wish. its up to you if u want to use rubber bands or not but if you do be sure you remove every single 1 by the next day
twist and rip- twist the section tightly then seperate the ends randomly in 1/2 pull the 2 parts away from eachother forcing knots towards the roots (does not need to be too forcefull or u can do dammage) keep retwisting and repeatting the seperating and pulling as seen in this video
this vids better, but is not in english, however its easier to see how its done
after you finish a dread you can palm roll a little if you want, it doesnt do much however and is not necessary.

Comment by Shawnee on May 10, 2012 at 3:43am Hey SE. is there a way that you could look at my photos and check to see if they are to much twist! Can you have to much twist? I just redid one and I made it tighter, you said that wasn't good? HELP! Thxs :)
Comment by ☮ soaring eagle ॐ on May 10, 2012 at 3:16am reets mau=intenance should be just wash anfd seperare shawnee shouldnt matter in fact better to be kooer then tighter
Comment by Shawnee on May 10, 2012 at 1:57am I have a question, I finished my dreads today! I went with the TnR method, my sister helped me do most of it! The only thing is that it looks like there are more twists in my hair and a little lose then actual rips! Would that make a difference on how they come out or delay them of becoming mature?
Comment by Raets782 on May 4, 2012 at 8:56pm What is the maintance rutine for this??i just took mines off that had wax and wish i saw this before i paid $40
Comment by Sarah Curran on April 16, 2012 at 1:22pm ok thanks took them off :)
Comment by ☮ soaring eagle ॐ on April 16, 2012 at 12:36pm dont tighten the roots the roots need to be loose for many mon ths leave the roots alonre to tighten themselves
Comment by ☮ soaring eagle ॐ on April 16, 2012 at 12:35pm take the elasticas off right away!
Comment by Sarah Curran on April 16, 2012 at 12:28pm hi, so ive had my dreads just over a week now. I put elastics on the roots about 3 days ago because i felt that they were getting very loose. I have washed them once with the baking soda. I am just wondering how long should i keep in the elastics and if i took them out what is the best way to tighten the roots? thanks :-)
Comment by ☮ soaring eagle ॐ on February 29, 2012 at 5:01pm no dont they will losen but they will dread washing 2 times a weeks better they dread best when clkean
how and with what u wash matters
so wash carefully just the scalp
Comment by Sarah Carville on February 29, 2012 at 4:31pm should i just twist and rip again if they come out when i wash my hair? i only wash it once every week on average >.< but i'm still afraid they'll loosen
Comment by ☮ soaring eagle ॐ on February 29, 2012 at 4:25pm yes totaly they wo=ill dread fine as long as u do not use the crochert hook on them thatsa horible mistake to make throw the hook in the trash
just let em dread
Comment by Sarah Carville on February 29, 2012 at 4:02pm i just joined the site today and i'm not familiar with the layout yet, but i'm giving it a go (: anyway, i've got two dreads both made with this method and then i used the crochet hook on them afterwards. i got bored today and decided to twist and rip all of my hair, though it's only been done very loosely. it resulted in looking like quite skinny dreads, and i was wondering if i left it like this without brushing them, would they start to develope and lock themselves like they do in the natural method? i like the resulting dreads from that method the best, so i tried it out. the only problem is i have extremely soft, thick wavy hair, even though i never ever brush or condition it, so the natural method wasn't wokring for me. does anyone think that the loose dreads (that's all i can think to call them, even though they're not really) will lock up?
thanks for any feedback in advance :3
Comment by anna b on February 7, 2012 at 11:31am thanks for the videos, im def gonna watch them soon, i was planning to do backcomb but twist and rip sounds much better! thnx for posting this :)

Comment by Rian Charme on January 21, 2012 at 11:47pm Hello to all, and in particular, SE.. I've spent 2 days reading this site and decided to join to hear some feedback to my quandry.. My son is 9 and we've been working on is dreads since summer. He is half black, and tho his hair is thick and loosely curly, the texture is considered more "white" than "black"... Anyway, I didn't realize the art form that dreading had become and how many schools of thought were out there. We ended up following our first lead, which was backcombing, waxing and interlocking. I can't tell you how many hours upon hours upon hours I have spent... His hair is short enough that I could comb it out and start over, but my question is this: is there a way to transfer out of interlocking and into TandR once you have started that way? as it grows out it it looks like it would not be set up to continue dreading, it looks like it would end up as a dread at the end of a loooong section of smooth hair : ) because what I am understanding is that TandR is only a method of starting the process, correct? The idea is that after TandR your only concern yourself with separating them...? My major problems right now are that because they 'came out' so much over the summer, the sections are no longer neat, and every couple weeks the hairs that cross over each other in the sections create a tangled problem in between the dreads at the scalp. And secondly, although the dreads are set and formed now (finally) there is SO much hair that has come out, there is kinda a halo of 'poof' all the time... I have brought those pieces back in when I interlock, but eventually they come out.. I have consulted with a hairdresser (yes, a hairdresser, but he has his own BEAUTIFUL long dreads so I respect his input) and his advise is to gently twist in the loose pieces each day, set with some heat, but that doesn't work because my son is 9!! he comes home from school every day stinkin and he needs a shower everyday. Perhaps that is just going to be our look, since the shower every day is not optional : ) So, I intended to be brief but ended up venting... Basicly there's just 2 or 3 questions in there I need answers to.. : ) Thank you for you time and guidance : ) Bless..
Comment by Agito B-Fabb Pierre on January 14, 2012 at 5:03pm right now i have the wax palm roll. I'm working on getting it out in the next few weeks and if this way will help them lock faster i can do this. my hair is a little bit of both but i feel that this will be more beneficial for me. i just value the insight of other people with experience.
Comment by ☮ soaring eagle ॐ on January 14, 2012 at 2:37am well theres 2 types of african hair the really kinky tyope that you can just finger twist and let it dread or the straighter type that yea this will work on technicaly either type it will work i=on just easier to do in less kinky types
either way it will work but so would neglect let it dread without doing anythug
what type ya gpt now? interlocked?
Comment by Agito B-Fabb Pierre on January 14, 2012 at 12:38am again i'm new to this and my locks haven't locked yet. my question is does this work on african hair as well? because all of the people i have seen do this have been caucasian with straighter hair that what i have. if this does work for african hair i will be able to take out my locks and do it this way for the more natural look than i have now. then i can leave it for the natural method after that. if anyone has any insight please let me know thanks!
Comment by Aloka Cinnamon Star on December 26, 2011 at 10:42am Wow..This site is Fantastic!!!!! Thank you soooo much for this...iv just started putting dreads in my hair by back combing and using a crochet hock ( which ended up with the hock in my finger argh!!!) looking for safer alternatives lol... iv got about ten done so far...should i re do them or carry on with the tnr process on the rest? :-)
Comment by Canaan Stravato on December 21, 2011 at 1:12am Few of my friends understand dreadlocks, and one has a cousin that did Backcombing, and won't leave me alone on how she thinks that it is a better method than twist & rip. What she has yet to realize is that he has had his for a bit over a year now, and I have had mine for almost three months. Although my roots are a bit loose, they look great, and are shoulder length. Anyone considering dreadlocks ought defiantly go with twist and rip. It took me about eight hours in one sitting to do them all. And once you get them done your hair starts growing a lot faster since your roots are being tugged. It's a beautiful alternative to the norm. Hope I helped some who desire to own some dreads. c:
I have a friend who wants dreads, and I told him I'd do them for him. Probably will go tnr since his hair's really short. Is 5 or 6 inches too short to start (It's really poofy and curly so it's hard to tell exactly), or should he wait until it's a couple inches longer? I just don't want him to look stupid. I haven't done tnr much before, so how much length loss is to be expected compared to backcombing? Thanks :)
