dreading methods

there are many ways to make dreadlocks and one way to grow dreads. natural dreads form on over time without much effort. there are newer methods to create dreads, these all have advantages and disadvantages.

dreading methods include:

natural/neglect - just stop combing

twist and rip-twist hair separate pull repeat

backcomb-comb the hair backwards towards the scalp

twist and neglect-great for african hair just twist then let it do its thing

crochet-use a crochet hook to weave hairs together

dread perm-use harsh chemicals to change the hair texture

salon dreads-pay someone else to mess up your head

johnny clean methodinstant dreads premature dread death

felting dreads complete and utter destruction of every hair in order to create instant dreads this method is being recommended by dreadheadhq to "fix dreads" using the "dread docta" which is just a felting needle.

wax was bad but if u got it out your ok twist n rip to not be braidlike yuou must randomize alot  when u twist twist only every sio often like every 10-125 pulls each split and pull should be in a random location  like not 1/2 and 1.2  sometimes only a few hairs on 1 side 99% the other then 309-60 etc the more random the better but if it is lil braidlike it wont matter in a while they rearange intio dreads

Comment by Brie on March 15, 2012 at 8:57pm

so i might have messed up a little, i started my dreads with wax, did a little thinking washed it out, but i used creamrinse and then restarted, im doing the neglect method as well as a little bit of backcombing but it seems that when i do the twist and pull it kinda turns into a braid, idk im kinda lost. anyone wanna give me advice?

Ok guys. I'm guilty of doing some interlocking, but, I don't do it tight. It drives me nuts when the hair grows from the scalp too long and the dreads don't lay right. My hair is naturally curly/wavy so the new growth causes my dreads to stick out and get crazy. I need to look somewhat presentable while I'm growing my dreads.

ive tried the natural approach...it doesnt work for me :( it seems as tho the backcomb is just like teasing my hair, which is not the look im going for.. any suggestions :)  id like to see what it looks like with the twist and rip.. not sure exactly how that method is done?? THanks :)

I apparently need to practice this method lol... I have been idly playing with my hair a bit this evening, thinking of doing a practice dread or two and leaving it, and having trouble getting it to dread up. it is very silky and soft at the moment which doesn't help. but i think i must be doing something wrong.

Comment by Julia Burkhard on February 24, 2011 at 6:07pm
I have just had my hair backcombed into dreads, and now it's falling apart. Am i doing it wrong? It is just very fuzzy and not sticking together :(

that sounds good to me. I ended up taking out my last dreads in october, they were 6 months old. I (obviously) didn't wax them or anything, but I did do some crochet at the start, and even though I think they had started to recover, they just never got soft - always felt really scratchy and like steel wool. Ugh. there was also alot of broken hair in there which I attribute to the crochet use. So - no more of that for me. Ya live & ya learn! I also had postpartum hair loss and the tiny short hairs growing back in were driving me nuts, so I figured I'd grow those with the rest of my hair so they will dread in and not have *so* many flyaways lol. In theory anyway - I know some frizz and loose hairs is normal and when it comes down to it the dreads will do what they want anyway. I am looking forward to a fresh start very soon.
