To henna dreads you really need to use body art quality henna (BAQ), this means it has beensievedseveral times until it is very fine, it makes a lovely smooth paste and washes out much more easily.
I found the katam hard to rinse as it isn't really available in BAQ. I have hennaed my hair for years now. I've also had balck hair which I did using henna and indigo. I wouldn't do black again as it is too dark on me. I fancied a change from red though and katam is good to get a chocolate brown colour.
I mixed it 50/50 with henna from which the dye had been released. To release the dye from henna you should mix it up to the thickness of a yogurt with lemon juice and then let it sit 12 hrs. The katam should be mixed at the last minute, with cold water and then added to the henna.
I use Henna too - and I think the next time I will take some katam too - looks really beautiful and not this typical henna - orange
May I asked you, how you mixed it? And add it on your hair?
I`m just at the beginning with natural dreads and my hair is very long. I colored it once since my journey starts and it was really very laboriously to wash them all out. Perhaps my paste was to thick? I have a lot of Henna rest there - like sand
Sorrry, for the bad english- hope you can understand
BAQ tends to have a higher dye content too, it's much better all round.

If you don't already know the Henna for Hair website you should take a look, it is full of fantastic info on natural dyes. They even have a free ebook in German: http://www.hennaforhair.com/freebooks/hennaaufdeutch.pdf
and this is a great place to buy your supplies: http://www.henna-und-mehr.de/de/sitemap.html
Happy dying.
