Welcome. Eagle's right about the braids. It will take longer for them to lock up. If you took them out, your hair would probably be kinked enough to start locking pretty quickly. Hopefully your roots aren't being puled tight. You should never see your scalp showing between your sections

They will change in appearance, loop, loosen, get frizzy and shrink. All this is normal, so don't worry when things look different, that just means they started the journey. Peace

welcome but just so you know braids to dreads are slower then any other method since they have to unbraid themselves to become dreads
natural aka freeform will dread faster then starting with braids
the tighter the braids are the slower it will be
