I like to wait for my hair to be dry before separating the roots (just a preference). Also I don't "pop" them because that's painful for me and I feel like it breaks a lot of hair. For ones that aren't mostly separated I pick the hairs and hold the root while pulling the length of it out of the loc it has merged with. Hope this helps! =]
