Well. Some days I love my messy hair. And some days I don't. And some days I'm afraid one of my bosses will pull me in the office for the "dreaded" talk lol! My locks are 3 months old on Tuesday, and are doing FANTASTIC on the top, kind of beginning on the sides, and just hanging out and being kind of normalish hair at the very back. I really do need to pull it back every day at work so I can kind of "hide" them as they mature because we have a dress code, and I refuse to "get them done" by a loctitian. It reminds me of keeping a cat in a "No Pets Allowed" apartment.

I was afraid about a week ago, because they're now so full of personality that they've started to just pop out and say "hi"! even with a band on, and tied back :-) "Oh hai! I'm Nappy Dread! How r u today?!?!" *waves at passersby behind my back*

What I'm learning from this all is how afraid I am to just be myself sometimes, and that I hold back from fear. My hair does NOT hold back, and when it doesn't, then I learn who loves me for me.

Luckily, the principle at one of the schools I work at thinks they are awesome, and had me smudge the school before we went back to class last Monday. Bless him, Bless him, Bless him!

If I need to have the "dreaded" conversation with the other principle, I hope I have the courage to defend myself and my dreads. As an artist and teacher, not having that kind of courage is kind of deadly to creativity. My locks are my prayer for righteous courage and good boundaries. I started them for spiritual reasons, as my prayer for unity for all people. The schools I work at are a fairly even mix of Latino, Black, and White kids. We create our own culture and I love what we do together. They are changing they world and I'm honored to be part of it. The commitment to my locks is a physical manifestation of commitment to my students, too.

I'm so glad to have found this site! I look forward to reading the stories of your journeys! xx

I love how messy my hair is, I tried to keep my previous set tidy but I could never make it happen without damaging my dreadlocks. This time round I'm just embracing how wild and messy my hair is when left to do what it wants :-)

I had a girl at school come up and ask if I was dreading my hair because no white girl would leave the house with her hair looking like that. I smiled and laughed and told her yes I was. I love the messiness! It has style and personality and it's just more ME than brushed hair. Messy hair has made me 10x more confident!

I was at a wine tasting the other day and the man pouring looked at me and said "I like your almost dreads" I laughed thanked him and told him they were babies.  He then told me that they were too fuzzy to be real and they won't look good long term. Damn boy!

I moved on with a smile but really, the fuzziness and messiness of immature dreads is gorgeous and constantly shifting! Embrace it beautiful people!

My family tell me I smell like a dead sheep! Not because they're moldy or anything but because my hair naturally smells a bit when it has been unwashed for a week! Plus all my roots clump together, it looks crazy!

Loopy, matted, frizzy, loose hairs in abundance.  Sound messy to you? LOL  Sounds PERFECT to me!!! Good thing, too, since that is exactly what I see when I look in the mirror these days, nearly 2 months into the journey...
