hi i am a dready mama just like all of you. i have a 2 yr old son who is awesome. i just wanted to make a group here where mothers could talk compare storied make friend and even share solicited advice. ive been on diffrent mom sites like cafe moms and it just seem like ppl on there are usually rude and non understanding of my decision to have dreads let alone dreading my sons hair. alot of them also seem to have diffrent views on alot of things then what i would have and alot of the moms i met on here have alot in common with me so here it is. a site for mamas who have dreads. your welcome here no matter what, if u have dread or want dreads if u have children or want children and if ur married widowed divorce or single, its the love of our children and the appreciation for dreads and eachother. Hiya, mommies! ^.^ I've just started my dread journey and I'm happy I found this site.  I have a little boy, Draedyn who is 3 years old. He's just a bundle of cuteness. He was born very premature so everyday has been a blessing and a joy! He's so smart and hilarious. Definitely one of the best personalities I have ever seen! =D My fiance and I are VERY lucky! It's nice to meet you all! <3

Thank you so much for creating this group. Im a single mom of a 2 year old and have just begun my dread journey. As excited as I am it comes with the anxiety (for me) of people judging me even more. Ugh. Crazy thing is that I feel SO beautiful and whole right now.

I guess I am lucky that my son is now going to a school that has excellent communication between faculty and parents.  I think it would be in your best interest to make an appointment with the principal to explain that your childs hair is going to be dreadlocking for spiritual reasons.  Then, with each new teacher, until the locks mature, do the same.

I think that if you make your intent clear from the start the matter of neglect will not be an issue.  And, if another person outside of the instructor goes to the principal thinking thus, you will have already established a rapport with them in regards to the situation to nip it in the bud before it's an issue.

The CPS (or DCFS) in my state, is a unique issue.  What some people think is neglect (like not brushing hair) can result in a report, but those report are often declared UNFOUNDED when investigated.

I work in child welfare.  I have never been afraid of them, even tho they make a lot of mistakes.  We were fully investigated when my step daughter came to live with us because she was a ward of the state (her mother was unfit for reasons that had nothing to do with hair).  A principal at my son's school half threatened a report because my son wore flip flops to school when she thought it was too cold.  My response was something along the lines of, "If you feel it is an issue, give them a call.  You are a mandated reporter and are required to do so if your professional judgement dictates.  I will be happy to have a conversation about natural consequences and unnecessary power struggles with the department."

My advice is educate yourself about the definition of abuse in your state and be ready to defend your position. Then live your life as you deem appropriate.  One of the fundamental beliefs in social work is self-determination.  Each person gets to choose how to live, as long as nobody is getting hurt.

Hi mamas! I've only been on my dreading journey for about 2wks now and wondered about my 2 yo daughter. I wanted to dread hers, but my hubby says that a teacher at preschool called CPS on his sister for bringing her kids in without their hair brushed. Can CPS take action against you for not brushing your kids hair? I'm gonna dread her hair anyway and just find a dread friendly school, but I want to know just in case it happens to me. Also, I use Johnson's baby wash on her, will that keep her hair from locking?
