I have started doing a couple of twist and rip dreads. I'm not too worried about how they're looking and i'm excited to let them do their thing, but i just want to make sure its not going to mess up the process that there is about an inch or so of untangled hair between my scalp and the more knotty part of it.

I couldn't quite figure out how to start the knots up toward the scalp so they started about an inch from it.

Excited to start everything, and thanks to everyone out there with such good advice. I've really enjoyed reading all of the threads.
Peace,

All I can talk about is my own experience.
One day I was fussing with my hair too much and I root-flipped one wonderful dred in the front-center of my head. Back then, I didn't even know about the terms root-flipping or interlocking; I was just playing around with my hair. By the next morning that dred was pulling SO tightly. I tried to loosen the root, but I couldn't. My scalp was seriously irritated, red, and I was afraid my hair at that spot was going to actually come out. I tried to live with it all that day, tried to work the root loose.

By night, that spot was seriously painful from the hair being pulled too tightly, so....I took a pair of scissors and cut that nice, nice dred off. I was so sad, but I couldn't stand the pulling and pain. That was a few months ago. Now I have a strand in the front-top that is going to have to grow about another 4 inches until it will lock up again.

So, my concern about interlocking or doing anything that causes tension/stress on the roots of your hair will eventually adversely affect the scalp, maybe even damage hair follicles and prevent new growth. I'm not saying, "I'm right" or that I have the answer for everyone...but just form my own bad experience, I wouldn't mess with my roots again or recommend that anyone else do so.

Also, the fact is, styled dreds are just plain a whole different event than natural dreds are. They look very different and the journey is entirely different.
