Hi, sorry I posted this before but dont know where it went.. I am really freaking out. I backcombed to start my dreads with the help of a couple of friends. One of them used a very fine toothed lice comb on some of them. I started worrying abput damage so unraveled part of a section from w 2 different sides. The sidethat was done with the fine comb has quite a lot of broken hairs. Does this mean my dreads are going to drop off in a few years....I feel sick with the worry. This was supposed to be a wonderful cathartic thing to help me deal with grief...my husband died last year....sorry, I know that is irrelavant to my hair but im just explaining how bad I feel. :(

Idk about the fine-tooth comb. I started my dreads with backcombing. They are almost three years old now. I would have loved to let them go neglect, but with hair down past my butt, and a small child, I felt I needed to get them started. I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I hope I was helpful in some way. <3

Back combing by nature breaks hairs up.  So you have little to worry about.  Everyone who back combs does roughly the same amount of damage to their locks.  TnR is always better.  But if you do back comb, a fine tooth brush like that is no problem.  I back combed 1 or 2 of my locks with a flea comb and they are still there 6 years later.

Thanks so much for the replies. Panic is over...I have these moments sorry. I undid one section from tip to root and the damage is minimal..I wont rebackcomb that one.I'll just let it do its own thing...thanks again :)

Hi kezz same as everyone else really. I backcombe my hairs 2 months ago amd to be honest after a couple of weekes and washes it all pretty much fell out and loosend and now im just leaving it. I figure although it is damaging as long as we just leave them and dont recombe when they loosen and just leave them and wash them then it will be all cool. I find the BS and ACV wash make them feel real snuggly amd fluffy now. Dont worry :)

to have a dread fall off it takes severe severe damage the kind crochet causes  its not enough to break a dozen hairs  literaly every hair had to be broken into 2  or 3 inch peices to be weakened enough to break easily  well that might be an exageration too but  u get what i mean  it has to have severe damage im no fan of backcombing cause it does do moderate damage  but ive never gerd of dreads breaking from backcomb damage alone
