If you want to do it without a big rubber band than you take two dreads from the bottom of your head and use them to tie your hair into a ponytail. Then you tuck the rest of your hair around them.

I use a large, tare free rubber band because my dreads aren't long enough to do it without one. I make a ponytail at the top of my head and then just tuck the dreads that are long enough under... and let the others stick up and poke out
i juszt take em and wrap em around and around then tuck em under

i would not use a rubber band
my dread buns are bigger then my head so i can only do em on top not back
I always did it the same way SE does, just twist all your dreads till they start to 'bun up' on the back of your head, then tuck the tips between the back of your head and the bun.
Cool..thank you. I will try it out tommorow and let you know how I get on. :D xxx
My dreads are to the small of my back and I really struggle with dread buns becasue they're so darn heavy - feels like its ripping the dreads at the front out from the weight of the dread-mass. Does anyone else find that? is there a way of making a bun that doesnt hurt so much???
I've no idea of that one, I totally get the weight thing, my first set was to the small of my back, but I had an undercut, so it wasn't a full head, so they weighed less, maybe if you made a bun with the back half of you head, then added to it with the middle of your head, then added the front in, I'm sure you'd still have some pulling, but maybe you can help spread out the tension so it's not just in one area.
I twist on both side, put those two side together in the back, I use a clip here to keep those 2 together and in one place. Now I have the hole group at the back of my head, I twist that large group (all dreads) together and then twist the very end around the larger part, tuck to hide the end and I now use a hair pin to keep all in place....this is harder than I though to explain in writing.
The other photo is a fishtail braid.

I guess the only way is to make the bun on top of your head..but that would probably make your neck sore, like when my dreads are wrapped in a towel after washing, turban like.

Oh..and I tried the bun but couldn't get it to work...I don't have much patience with hairstyles!! :D
Ok here is a drawing that may be of help. Please let me know if you are able to work with this. I have never had pain due to the weight of my dreads in a bun. If they were wet there would be some weight issue, when dry mine are light and airy like. My dreads are now (after they have shrunk) to just below my shoulder bland, a few to my waist.
Do you know how to do the fishtail braid? When doing either style I get my hair a little wet or spray with saltwater/lemon juice/water, this will hold in most of the frizzies. The picture of my dreads in a fishtail braid is after a long day of gardening outside. Lots of frizzy there. Please let me know if this helps, after you have done it a few time it become very easy and quick to do...like 3-4 minutes tops.

I love the diagrams! thats loads of help!

Thank you so much for the diagram..I will have to give it another go when I have some pins...although I may just have too much hair for it to work.
