Hey everyone! im enjoying the month and a half that ive had them so far, they are getting tighter and tighter all the time! The only problem is that i have alot of strands of hairs that arent in any dreads, there seems to be more and more every few days, and id rather they go away then keep showing up. I dont crochet them or anything. I wash them, and palm roll maybe once a week. dip in sea salt water every 3 days, thats it.

Im guessing they will all be pulled into dreads over time, but at this rate, ill have more loose strands then dreads. From a distance they dont even look like dreads unless you take a good look, thats how bad its getting. Im only worried because this doesnt look like they are progressing positivly at all. My question is, how can i get rid of these fairly quickly, and how do i stop loose strands from falling out???

ALSO, i have a flattened dread in the back of my head. its completly flat, but its pretty tight and i cant roll it or anything, it stays like that, how do i fix that too???

Thanks everyone.

have ya had a look at SE dreads? hes had em for like 20 yrs, and they fuck off long and healthy just like any of the other heaps long dreads he has used the "dont fuck with em " method...any kind of damage with that kinda weight on em is gunna course em to snap/have thin sections etc...

SE: I think you're overrating how much damage felting does. Of course it will be damaging if you do it a lot, or very aggrisively, but if youre carefull the hair folds instead of beaing shreded. Felting sculptures are made by the same method, and they don't seem to fall apart, do they?
By the way, the needles don't have giant barbs as the picture you posted. They arent even visible to the naked eye :P

it wont
palm rolling does noting unless your so obsessive about it you cause weakness and damage, palm rolling can make em semi round for a few minutes but tey return to saope soon after

but its not opeless you lay on a dread 1 way enoug it gets flat..but dreads move under you so flatten on different sides diffferet nigts over time tis rounds em (iusualy) but even if tey stay flat u will love themn cause tey arent round and borring

I felted some of my dreds and I strongly suggest NOT FELTING your hair. I was playing around with wool felting, had had my dreds for a few months & suddenly got the *bright* idea to felt my hair. I'm not going to say that doing a teeny bit of felting here or there, maybe to repair a broken dred or something is the end of the world. But, believe me, when the hair grows, the felted dreds break. I didn't believe they would but mine did. I lost 3 dreds from felting.

I love the "messy" when hair is dreding. No worries about it....respect the process and you'll love your dreds so much more.

ive decided not to do anything to them at all, especially not felting. but its quite the challenge not to touch them because now they barely look like sections, they still are sectioned but there is just soo much loose hair and so many dreads are loose, but im enjoying watching them work, and they feel better now that im never playing with them. im hoping them next few months will do better for them then the past two.

Yeah, I saved one of mine that broke from felting it some months ago. I can take a picture of it ; ) I've done everything under the sun to my hair, nothing ever caused it to break except felting it. I've bleached it platinum in times past, never even broke from that.

If you're worried about how you look in public, get a tam, or even crochet one for yourself. Look on youtube and you can learn how very easily (this is what I did, pics of the finished tam are on my page). I'm 44 days in right now and I still have a lot of the loose hairs and such even tho it's all sectioned out and locking quite nicely overall. One thing I can tell you that REALLY helped me, is SE's baking soda wash mix... For the first two weeks I was using knotty boy all purpose shampoo bar and it seemed like every time I washed, things loosened up and there were more stray hairs, very similar to regular shampoo. Then I decided to try the magical land of baking soda and essential oils. I could tell a HUGE difference immediately after the first time I used it (pics of this are also on my page). After I use the wash (2-3 times a week), I dry my scalp by rubbing lightly in a circular motion with a towel (this also helps form knots, which is always a plus), squeeze as much water out of my dreads as possible with the towel, separate and roll very lightly (just for neatness' sake) and that's it. After the first time I used the baking soda mix, locks that were just starting to form and that were still very spongy and loose, almost immediately started hardening and tightening up. If you haven't tried the wash, you need to. Other than that, patience and good luck.

oh, about the flat dread... SE is always going to be the best person to listen to in my opinion, but we all have different and individual experiences. Here's a bit of my personal experience with that... About a week and a half ago I noticed that one of mine was becoming flat but I'm not ready for flatness at this point and wanted it back round.. When your hair is wet, it's more workable and susceptible to manipulation, so I used that to my advantage... After one of my washes, I rounded it back out by squeezing it with my fingers and then I wrapped that dude up nice and tight while it was still wet. I left the wrap in for a couple days and when I took it out, "Voila!", back to round. Could work for you, might not. It's worth a try tho, if it's really bothering you.

i know you said you decided to just let your dreads be however after you wash you can shape your dreads much easier than palm rolling. it'll round them up a bit a little at a time with every wash. sooner than later it'll be more round. everyone has some flat ones though i know i have at least 3 or 4. probbaly more i odnt see. also to get rid of loose hair try finding the dread there supposed to be in and ball them up between your fingers until the ball is down to the root. pull enough of the ball apart to stick it at the base of our dread and just push it in there. then palm roll which you do anyway and make sure the ball stays. maybe use a bead to hold it in. it works well. however do not weave the loose hairs through your dreads. i tried this on one and it didnt turn out well. it leaves kinks where the heair wont dread. i may have to redo the backcomb six months in now cause i cant see hoe itll fix itself. but well see. hope this helps.

oh! also the matter what you do your sections are gunna disapear. it happens. unless your way anal

I have the same thing going on, but it's getting better. I'm about 3 months into this thing. I started wearing a wool tam, and would regularly rub my dreads throughout the day. It's amazing how quickly those loosies join dreads. I was suddenly having to pop all my dreads apart.

For my flat dreads in the back, I pop a bead on for a day or two.
