Permalink Reply by Desirae Rose on August 23, 2011 at 10:39am For me there is no downside. I love everything about having locs and wouldn't change it for anything. Even if I decided to cut all my hair off, I'd just end up growing them again.
Do I wish I had started sooner? Absolutely. Do I wish they were a bit thicker? Yep. Do I wish I had been successful in starting them organically like I wanted? Of course, but now I know where my mistake was; it was that I didn't separate my fro, but then I guess that wouldn't be starting 'organically'. But I love having locs anyway.
I could be annoyed that it's assumed locs are dirty and smelly and that people who have them stink and don't wash their hair (which is hilarious, because not only does my hair smell fresh and clean because it IS, I bathe/shower more than many people). But the people who make those assumptions are usually the ones with poorer hygiene who are walking around with body crust. I could also be annoyed that it's assumed locs = pothead to many people, except I'm 'boring' in that I've never had alcohol, or smoked anything in my life. I could also be annoyed that it's assumed locs are somehow not 'beautiful' or 'versatile' or 'professional' but the people who think that are morons, anyway. So really, the 'problems' are not my own, but other people's issues.
Permalink Reply by Ferret on August 23, 2011 at 11:15am I love my dreads but nothing sucks more than when you get one stuck to Velcro. Or when half your head somehow gets stuck to your jacket and you have to rip it off your head.
that made me snort coffee out of my nose... I got the best mental pic of someone struggling with a coat velcroed to their head :D
Permalink Reply by Ms. Lambergiinnii on August 23, 2011 at 4:59pm I have way more ups than downs with my dreads babies!
The Pros- * No more Creamy crack (aka relaxer!)
* Little to no maintenance to go out the door.
*swimming( I no longer have to deal with giant wet afro I have to comb while wet to maintain!)
*Wrapping em in scarves! ( So much easier to wrap up my hair.)
*Attaching lil decorations...I just got a lil fish bead from a friend I attached to one.
*texture ( is it weird I love the texture of my dreads?)
And many more.... A couple Cons- * piercings....My nape piercing and my tragus piercings do not see eye to eye with my dreads. Constantly getting caught up in them.
*dry time ( I like to shower after work which is later so it usually involves me using my blow dryer so i can go to bed with dry dreads.
*common stereotypes about dreads. YES THEY ARE CLEAN I WAS THEM REGULARLY! GAHHH!
*and I have a love hate relationship with the shrinkage. I love it cause it means they are maturing but hate that they are gonna get short before they get long! So far I've had a lot of shrinkage.

YES, Velcro is the enemy'] I got mine stuck in my husband's back brace when I bent over a chair the brace was laying on to pick something up, UGH, lol.

I love the texture too, like soft knotty sweater, I make my kids feel them all the time, lol!

Permalink Reply by Mary on August 24, 2011 at 12:00pm My only downside is when I stick some cowrie shells in my hair. My kitten gets entranced by their movement she tries to pull one out.
Permalink Reply by Desirae Rose on August 24, 2011 at 2:04pm Another annoying issue. Stupid people who NEVER leave their locs alone and think it's 'wrong' if others don't maintain theirs 24/7.
Dumbass people thinking kids shouldn't have locs.
