The Dyeing of the Dreads! What Color Are Yours?

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

I've dyed my dreads a lot... and its a pain to keep up.
I never go to a salon, always done it myself or had a friend help.

Basically the same rules apply as dying regular hair.. except you can't use conditioner afterwards so regular hair dye tends to be more damaging to dreadlocks.

If you plan to just keep up on your roots it will be a much less tedious process.

If you want vibrant color in your hair you'll have to bleach first... then veggie dye works well for the color, and its actually good for your hair. but it does fade quickly.
You can also use the veggie dye over dark hair for subtle highlights... but again it fades so quickly, to me its hardly worth the mess. (and believe me there is a mess, the color stains everything lol)

Also, Baking Soda/ACV strips a lot of the color out of hair, so you may want to use mostly dr. bronners or dreadlock shampoo bars after you dye.

I've attached a few pics, the first pic my hair was dark blondish, and I bleached a few random dreads. Then I used Manic Panic veggie dye (2 canisters) in Vampire Red and the results are pic 2.
In pic 3 I dyed my hair brown, with a red intensifier... and then after it faded I used manic panics semi-permanent dye in a purple color with more of the red intensifier mixed in. The purple tint faded to brown really quickly though.

If you have any questions I'm happy to help :)

Are You On Instagram? If so, what about a DreadlocksSite account?

General Talk

Fantastic Idea!! I have an instagram (melonyceleste)

I'm following a few different dread accounts on there already, but none of them solicit the amazing advice that so many on this website are willing to offer.

I would love to be apart of this if you do set up an account :)

Nothing wrong!! different types of hair dread at different lengths of time. :)
Personally, I've had to come to terms with the loops and bumps. I'm kind of a perfectionist, so its taken me a lot of patience and a huge change of perspective in order to appreciate them just the way they are. <3
Good luck to you

Henna Dye

General Questions

Have you tried any veggie dyes?
They wash out relatively quickly, but the color is really vibrant and pretty for a few weeks. Plusthe dye is not at all damaging to hair.

Imperfect sectioning

Introduce Yourself

Mine are all different sizes!! no two are the exact same size, in fact.... many are different sizes at the top then they are at the bottom lol
Point is, its normal. The different sized dreads make your hair look more natural in my opinion.

I can't decide if I should be offended, or if this was post is meant to be humorous.

Itchy scalp still. Please help!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I've been having a similar issue... In my opinion, BS/ACV is best for a deep cleanse. I was using it every 2-3 days and I would get really itchy as well. Now I switched to dreadlocks shampoo bars, and I wash every other day with noitchiness.OccasionallyI still use BS/ACV rinse, but only when its been a while in between washes and I need a deep clean.

After dreadlocks????

General Talk

If I decide I don't want my dreads anymore I would shave my head... my hair grows pretty quickly so I'm not too worried about it.
