rough dreads

Dread Maintenance

ok, so it's been 5 months, the tnr sections are all grown out to the tips, I don't root rub, I never crocheted, I don't use any products, no sea salt no wax, nothing. I wash with dr. bronners, and they are still rough!!! seriously? Maybe some sort of conditioner? I really don't want to start putting crap in my hair and have buildup, and stinkies. Not to mention that I like the very low maintenance approach. HELP!

rough dreads

Dread Maintenance

Ok awesome. Thanks everyone. I did tnr in the beginning and had a whole lot of crossed hairs that broke when I separated them. That seems to be done with though so I guess the rough sections will grow out. I appreciate it bunches :0)

rough dreads

Dread Maintenance

Hey all, My dreads are about 5 months old now. They are really coming along nicely, Except, The half that is near my head is rough (they feel like they have little hooks like velcro). What in the world can I do about that? Is it something that will resolve as they mature more? Is that how dreads feel? I confess that I haven't ever touched anyone else's dreads.

itchy

Introduce Yourself

my dreads are super itchy every other day, so I wash them (baking soda, I tried with and without vinegar, it doesn't seem to matter) any tips on going longer between washes? My dreads are 2 months old.

ripping apart every time I wash

Dread Maintenance

My dreads are about 2 months old, I have been washing with baking soda (but not acv because my hair is super soft and I didn't want them to unravel) I twist and ripped myself, and I guess I got a lot of crossed hairs in my sections because every time I wash the roots fuse together and I have to rip them apart...is this normal? Should I just keep doing it? Am I damaging them? Will they stop doing this as they mature? Thanks.

....it's probably crisscrossed hairs...maybe they will stop once they are ripped apart enough?

My roots become massively congoed every time I wash (They are 3 weeks old). Is this just because they are babies?

bronners making my hair soft?

Introduce Yourself

Ok so i figured out what is happening. If you go on youtube and look up the "no poo" people, they have untangled hair, but they only wash with baking soda and acv. they say that their hair got way softer and silkier when they started to do this. I think that is how my hair responds to it. Seriously, it always felt like my tips had conditioner in them. So I washed with trader joes tea tree vegetable tea tree bar soap (I have used it on my skin for awhile now and am confident that it is non residue) and my tips felt like actual hair when I was done :0) yay! Even though I am not redoing the unraveling that happened before I figured this out, I am confident that the tips will lock now.
