Had to Cut Off a Dread

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I get pretty large flakes too. It definitely can be a downer when you picture your dreads looking awesome and then you walk by a mirror and see huge flakes. I've been using the shampo bars from dreadlock shampoo more often then the liquid now and that seems to help some. When it gets really bad, or I need to look nice, my wife will sit down with a pair of tweezers and CAREFULLY remove the most visible ones.

shedding a few hairs everytime I shower

Dread Maintenance

Thanks guys that helps ease my mind. I guess I'm still worried about my hair since I started with the perm. I do notice though that the growth that had locked up on its own since then seems a lot stronger then the permed part. So eventually I guess I'll have more natural dreads then permed parts and can cut those off

shedding a few hairs everytime I shower

Dread Maintenance

So Ive read that the success for healthy dreads is that you don't shed hair and all of it stays in to keep them strong. Well lately everytime I shower around 5 hairs show up in my hands ranging between a quarter of an inch to two inches. As some of you know I started with a dread perm before I found this site about 9 1/2 months ago. Since then I have done nothing but wash with dreadlock shampoo and separate. At first they got really messy but now they are starting to take good shape. Should I be worried about these hair Im shedding? Im scared that if they are from the roots then eventually my dreads will completely thin out. My roots range from about 1inch -3inch of loose hair depending on where they are on my head. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

dread newbie please help

Introduce Yourself

Good luck brother. I started mine at the salon too about 7 months ago with a dread perm. They are ridiculously messy now but that's what I get. I'll be honest some days you are going to be tempted to do maintenance because they look so crazy. Just come here for inspiration!

Dreads and the healthcare profession...

Life Issues Facing Dreads

I'm a male nurse and honestly I think they have made me a better nurse in a round about way. Because I know that people judge on appearance first I make it a point to start a connection right away with patients and family. More than once I have overhead that young man with the dreads I'd really nice. I really like him.

where to get products in San Antonio, TX

Dread Products

Little off your topic, but I just came back from Austin and San Antonio on vacation. I got more compliments in 1 week there than I have in 4 months at home. Funny how different cities have different attitudes.

How old were you when you started your dreads?

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

I'm 35. Had a hard time growing up. Whites didn't except me cuz I was half Asian. Asians didn't because I was half white lol. Hard to be mixed in the 80s. I pretty much eventually embraced my differences in high school n became the "cool" kid because I was tough n different. Now I enjoy standing out. Plus I like pirates, Celtic warriors, n shit lol. I love wearing my kilt looking half Asian with dreads!

dready interests

Pros pretty much what everyone said.Cons: I've heard some people with really long dreads have it hurt there neck. That's about it lol. Oh yeah, I do miss wearing my Irish style caps. Already had a big head, can't find one to fit me now. Sucks lol

General Talk

Awesome post. I also love the fact that even when people don't agree on things here for the most part everyone is still caring and there's not the "flaming" that goes on on the rest of the internet
