White gunk on scalp, Dry skin? Baking Soda? Help!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Alright, first, EVERYONE should read this post as well as the responses, as the OP works as a pharmacy tech with vast knowledge in chemistry. http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/baking-soda-and-sea-salt-ratios On that note, SE, I understand where you're coming from telling him to add more BS, however, make sure you don't add too much, as this can be harmful to the human body. They talk about it in the responses of the above thread I linked.

At one point, they do use some technical jargon, but a little google, can help you there. Me personally, wouldn't go more than 3/4 of a cup/p 5 cups of water as you run the risk of the alkalinity being too high.

Lemme break it down to Barney terms. Normal BS solution(1/2cup w/ 5 cups water) has a Ph balance of, roughly 7-8. If you increase the amount of BS, the balance goes up to something like Nair! Nair has a Ph balance of 12. Reducing BS amount will lower the balance and effectively renders the solution moot.

Again, read through the thread I linked, and that should help you with the questions you have.

Not washing hair enough ?

Dread Maintenance

How big is "one of those large water things"? It should be 2 tablespoons of salt, for every quart(32oz, 4 cups) of water. If your container is larger, add 1/2 tablespoon for every 8oz.

My DREAD-full journey<-- see what I did there

Member Journals and Timelines

EDIT: SO, here's what my nugget looks like as of yesterday-22Sep. The MAJOR difference is that I shaved the sides and back, which I plan on keeping short, and just growing out the top!! The one thing that's....silly, is every morning when I wake up, my dreads are sticking strait up, like a crown. I'll have to post a pic of that too. And ladies, feel free to hate on me for my shirt, most do!! :D

Also, I am going to be starting college at the University of Louisville in January getting my degree in computer engineering and computer science. So, I'm looking forward to seeing my dreads progress as my education does!!!

Here's the Front shot

Here's a shot of the back

aaaaand, the top of my nugget

Hey all, so I let my hair get to about 3" after I got out of the Army, as everywhere I looked said thats the minimum you should have to start.

I'm planning on going as natural as I can, i.e. no wax/backcombing etc. what I did do though, was started out just rubbing my hair clockwise for a few days to mat my hair up, as you can see in the pic.

Today, was the first time I used a wool cloth(my old army beret, which I thought was kind of poetic) and did the whole wool rub. Which after the state my hair was already in, worked incredibly well!

So, I'll be updating as time goes on, and am very much looking forward to this!!!
This was from the couple days ofbare handrubbing

What's up everyone!

Introduce Yourself

Hey there. My name is Bob, but you can call me Thor...I've had the nickname long before the movie came out!I was in the Army for 9 years, but have wanted dreads even longer. I was medically retired earlier this year, in March. SO, after letting my hair grow a bit, I've finally decided to begin my journey to rockin' dreads! I'm really excited and can't believe I finally get to do it!!!I found this site while doing research on starting dreads. SO, now that I have begun, I figured I would sign up, introduce myself, and meet the community.I'm gonna post in the timeline forum as well, so if you wanna see pics and more details, you can pop in there.Again, nice to meet everyone, and am looking forward to being a dreadhead...as my girlfriend so lovingly puts it! lol

Help! Save My Dreads

Well, I'm a YouTube whore(lol), and have already been doing this a little. I will, however, start doing it more frequently. But there's a LOT of crap on that site...and even more moronic trolls, so it'll take some time, but...should be fun! I love hatemail, it always makes me giggle, the things people come up with.
