Head lice! Help!

Help! Save My Dreads

My little cousin came over about two weeks ago, and long story short, i found ADULT lice in my brothers head. I've been itching, but I wash my hair every three days, and usually after a wash my head gets itchy due to sensitive skin, with the BS. I'm so paranoid I have lice, i do NOT want to comb my dreads out. It's only been 3 months starting again, but I'm so attached to them already. :( Is there a sure fire way i can get rid of them, or should i just comb out do a treatment and start over? :(

My mom tried to go through my dreads to look at my scalp, but i'm at such a frizzy stage, and have matted roots that i have to separate almost daily, and on top of that, she doesn't even really know what to look for. She can't tell the difference between nats, eggs, or dandruff, and it's hard to pull on what she finds, because my hair is so matted, you can't really just "slide" anything off, and I know eggs stick to the shaft.

How To Make Dreads Neat Without Crochet Hook

crochet and dread tools recovery

I don't want to jump to conclusions, or offend him by any means, his case could be TOTALLY different! That being said, I know where he's coming from. Before I had dreads I was extremely self conscious, I never really thought that I cared what others thought about me, but I did more than I realized. I'm not sure if it was so much about what I thought about me, or what others did, but when I first got my dreads (first set a few years ago) I was self conscious about them. I'd hide them away under a bandana, or hood, and never wore them out. If I didn't have either of those things I had them in a bun or pony tail. I re-dreaded back in July, and I've never felt such a release, to just stop caring about what my hair was doing that day, and that I didn't have to sraighten/curl it. It was hard at first, but dreading my hair has been extremely therapeutic.. My dreads have taught me patience, and how to just let things go they way they are meant to! I don't think you could have the spiritual part of dreading (which i used to think was a bunch of hippy crap) unless you allow yourself to. Maybe he's just not ready for his journey. Before someone goes through their journey, they don't really understand all the things dreads can do for them, they kind of fit their needs so to speak, and work with you.

why do you think you have an image to uphold?

Kaila,

Where do you put your dreads when sleeping, off to the side? Or up over the pillow behind you? I've been just scooping mine up with my hands is laying them up over the pillow.

I really want to avoid loosening up the knots of the dreads at the roots.

I realize that dreadlocks are supposed to be like a chill growth process, but I do have to provide some guidance here, as I have a so-called "image" to uphold.

Crochet and waxed dread rescue (apologies for the ramble)

Dread Maintenance

Getting off topic here, but thank you for posting that. My fiance is a mechanic, and comes home with black hands, and washes his hands with ajax -.- lol if it bleaches your tub, it's probably not good for your hands, plus it doesn't really do much.. But he's a man.. And MY man, and knowing that, he's hard headed hahaha :), but again thanks for posting, i'll have him try that when he gets home from work :D

There is a trick my father taught me for cleaning "difficult" fat or fat-based chemicals off of one's hands (such as tar) but I don't know how well it would translate to hair.
It goes like this. "Start by making it worse".. get a semi-solid fat (such as butter or margarine) and let it soften to about room temperature, then lather it into the hands (or hair as the case may be) because the softer fat will loosen up the harder fat. Then wash your hands (hair) with dish soap (cause it's made to loosen up fat).

When I've done this with my hands, it takes one quick wash to get 'em perfectly spotless while others are scrubbing away with those brush thingies trying to get the grease off their hands....

Crochet and waxed dread rescue (apologies for the ramble)

Dread Maintenance

Just be easy with him. He's had very high maintenance dreads for a long time now, crocheting can be addicting, specially when he isn't used to all of the loops, loose hairs, and wonderful things that come with just letting go! You have to think about it as not only a rehabilitation for his dreads, but for him also. If you push too hard about the crochet hook (which i think is gonna be harder to have him drop than the wax) he might just get annoyed, and keep wanting to do it his way. If he can't stop with the crochet altogether, let him cut back gradually, gradual, is better than him getting discouraged, and quit quitting altogether lol:) good luck to you both! :) keep us updated on his progress if he doesn't decide to join :D

It is okay to squeeze the water out of the dreads, but NEVER wring or twist them. Over time it will thin your dreads out, as it causes breakage. Regular hair or dreaded hair is fragile when wet, please use care :)

i kind of ring my hair out like you would a sponge, or wet shirt or something lol, then squeeze excess with the towel, then air dry. I generally pour the BS over my head, do something for 15 minutes, to a half hour, then hop in the shower, rinse, then wash the rest of me, and keep my hair away from the water as much as possible to give it a head start on drying. I only do the ACV about once a week, to every other week though :)

Thanks! I love how welcoming and beautiful everyone seems on this site. Happy to have found it! I already have tons of loose hairs. It really doesn't bother me though...Rawr ;D I just finished my second bs/acv rinse. I really need to get some tea tree oil soon though, because that acv is just too unpleasant for my nose! When drying your hair, do you just squeeze out as much water as possible and then let the rest drip dry? I refuse to use a blow dryer, seeing as how that's one of the many reasons for them.

Lol completely! the fuzzy-ness will turn into frizzy-ness, and they'll make loose hairs, which will turn into new dreads, it's like a birthing process, it's weird, but amazing!

Yeah I thought they still looked pretty thin for 6 months, just keep up with the ACV and they'll repair, and get fuzzy and beautiful :), congrats on the change!
