my 17 month dreads and I really enjoy having them

General Talk

I put mine up when I feel there may be an "incidental touching." I don't care for others touching either unless they have been pre-approved and very few are for me.

cutting dreads

Dread Maintenance

I have two locs that have a large loop towards the bottom. Sometimes I get frustrated, but then I usually decide I don't want to look at them anymore and wrap my head up. Out of sight, out of mind. Usually by the time I unwrap, they look so good I've forgotten all about it. The time I usually notice the loops are with washing, I also notice the stray hair that has come out of the lock, the hair around the edges of my forehead, one crooked one, a super skinny one... I just have to remind myself that I am not my own best critic. My boyfriend grabs a handful and praises them - he's my critic and whose opinion I need to stick to because I'm harder on myself than is necessary.

I have many that are doing exactly what yours are doing, but it's all part of the process! I actually found myself wondering...

cutting dreads

I believe soaringeagle is right...

I've seen your pics and I think those locs are meant to be the way they are. They have their own identity and were meant to be. It would be something close to an atrocityto cut them. Your locs are unique (and beautiful), as I'm sure you are unique too. Perhaps the tips will settle in over time, but you've got to give them the chance first. Don't be upset by them, own them.

Can't put my finger on it but they have a purpose. Don't know if anyone has ever "divined" loc tips, but there should be a method for it somewhere (lol).

Garnier Pure Clean

Dread Products

I know this post seems to be over with already, but I thought I'd add the information for anyone who is still wondering if they should try the product or not.

I actually did a month trial of this shampoo, just because I was curious enough and secure with the amount of locking I have so far. Before this shampoo I just used Dr Bonner's products. I wash my hair 3 times per week (may be a lot for some, but my hair does best with this schedule). When I first started it seemed to work great. I was a little put off by how strong the fragrance was after, because it has to be leaving something to leave the fragrance behind, but i continued none-the-less. Slowly my hair started dulling over time. I do use oils in my hair, but it seemed that I couldn't get it back to the way it used to be. My hair looked depressed to me. I finally started with Dr Bonner again and after the first wash, all these clumps of white things were at the roots after shampooing twice (I usually shampoo once since I do wash frequently). Beneath the white string like things was the shine to my hair. Still a little duller than it was previously, but at least I know the answer. The rest of the bottle of Pure&Clean is going to my daughter. I'm sticking with Dr B, raw honey, raw coconut oil, horsetail rinses, and my oils.

Honey

Dread Maintenance

Just for the sake of clarity, not as an attempt to get anyone to use it, the honey is not applied full strength and is therefore not "sticky" or "stiff" at all. It is diluted in distilled water so that it acts more like a rinse than applying goo to your locs. Never take from anyone that they apply anything without knowing how they are applying it and in what mixture. The other factor is that raw, unprocessed honey is used, not the stuff you find in your regular grocery market. Mostly because the processing has removed all the key ingredientsthat you needto be includedin that rinse. The raw honey disperses and becomes a water-like texture after dilution, not syrupy like the processed version. And, btw, people also use honey face masks. There have been recipes for these things for thousands of years, many things have natural healing properties but we are taught by our culture to overlook those things.Grandma taught us to use many natural ingredients many of which we didn't go any further than our garden for, but media has taught us to reject them in favor of their processed alternatives that we pay extra for.

Honey

Dread Maintenance

I've used raw honey in my hair in a mix of other things to give it a good conditioning. It was not sticky and I never attracted any bugs, living in Texas we have a lot of them. It did great in my hair, conditioned better than store bought products yet the integrity of my locs remained unchanged. However, like any other deep/regular conditioner, you do have to rinse it out. There is no conditioner I would leave in even if it is labeled to be left in, so the honey does not remain in the hair. My profile pic with my hair being very shiny was after that particular treatment.
