Dreadlocks + The Hardcore Modification Community

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

Hi everyone!

I have noticed that alternative living in a large part of people's lives here, especially that of the 'modification' community :)

I'm curious as to who has what on this site!

My modifications ties in quite closely to my lifestyle- as does my hair! I'd love to hear your experiences + stories and see pictures of your modifications, if you'd like to share them :)

This is my most recent addition, as a part of my coming of age ritual for my 21st birthday- I had my tongue surgically split! :D

Crocheted Dreadlocks.

Help! Save My Dreads

Okay thankyou so much! I never wash my hair- I don't use shampoos unless I absolutely have to (I'm a part of the 'no shampoo' movement ;D) but I will do what I do with all of my other body modifications- LITHA!

Leave It The Hell Alone! :D

Again, thankyou so much!

Crocheted Dreadlocks.

Help! Save My Dreads

Okay, here's the deal; I'm a bald little elf. I shaved almost all of my hair off- except my fringe, sidelocks + a tuft of hair on top- it's VERY Tank Girl + I love it alot.I had been toying with the idea of dreadlocks for years, so one day I bought a teeny tiny little crochet hook + gently crocheted 2 inches of my roots to form loose, fuzzy dreads.Like this: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=599067&l=8954025a49&id=100000165461560 Every few weeks, I would crochet my roots again- just gently, so as to not rush my hair. The dreadness came together raather nicely, with my ends still undreaded + loose.Like this: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=603766&l=28c8fcc733&id=100000165461560 http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=669916&l=9901025f7e&id=100000165461560 I got kind of tired of having loose, fuzzy ends, so I gently crocheted the whole dread to the tip.Like this: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=681202&l=9d8cc05de4&id=100000165461560 They came together really nicely- I didn't really fiddle with them much, except to wash my hair every two months or so. I haven't used any product on them whatsoever- except maybe a little jojoba oil, when I moisturise my earlobes.Anyhow, my question; I've noticed recently, as I've let the roots grow out heaps, that they've become a little on the thin side. I have a wide toothed comb I used to gently push some of the knot down to merge more with the regrowth, but I'm a little short of information as to what to do next? I haven't experienced any breakage, or any other issues asides from thinness, so any help I could have on the matter of making sure my roots don't get too icky would be fabulous :3Thanks heaps! <3

modern primitives, returning to a living with nature lifestyle

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

I thoroughly enjoy this topic :)I don't know if I could 'fully' call mysElf a Modern Primitive, but I follow the lifestyle quite closely. I don't drive, and believe in walking/owning a bike is the way to go. I'm a vegan, and grow most of my own produce/cook my own food, dreaded my own hair + am a 'shampoo free' girl :)I also am quite heavily involved in the modification side of it- I recently split my tongue in my coming of age ritual for my 21st (not personally- I had a modification artist do it for me), have large stretched earlobes and septum which are all symbols of gaining wisdom + strength, which is really appropriate for me :)I would really love to give living in a TiPi a go- I don't know how I would go about doing so in Austrralia as winter is on its way, but I am looking forward to living in a forest in a tent which is what I am planning for summer! :D
