hello :)

Introduce Yourself

Welcome! Tons of good info here. Sometimes disguised as blunt criticism ;). I backcombed and waxed at the start. It all works out if you let it!!

sick of my dreads

General Talk

I have certainly had the feelings you describe, days of looking in the mirror and going, "what was i thinking? i look horrible!!" and then i have days (way more often) of thinking "this is part of the walk i'm on, and things are going just right".

I work as a nurse in an ICU, and my coworkers have gotten curioser and curioser the longer i've been dreading, so questions have become more frequent and pointed. the washing question is by far the most popular one. fortunately, i'm pretty secure and don't value the opinions of others much, so if it's my coworkers asking, and being respectful, i answer w patience and continue educating on dreads. on the other hand, one physician who is always a condescending smart ass has made some comments about my having a head injury (i was wearing a wide white headband that day) and something else about the dreads which i can't recall at all (that's how important it was to me), and in light of our professional relationship and my lacking the need to always have the last word, i simply ignored him. on a positive note, he hasn't said anything else about it for a few weeks now.

so i hope you can find peace, whatever you decide. my advice is to go with your gut feeling, whatever feels right to you, but give it enough time that it is truly a decision and not a knee-jerk reaction to this negativity you're feeling.

peace to you!

General Questions

SE, I so get that!! I was accosted by a very distant acquaintance at the dr office a few weeks ago, she kept asking "so, what's up w your hair? What'd you do to it?"Not being in my most Zen of states, I kept answering, "what're you talking about?" w confused expression. She finally stopped asking. :)

what jobs do u people do

General Talk

I'm a registered nurse with not one but two jobs! I work full time in a busy intensive care unit, and one day a week in a chest pain observation unit. My dreads are five months old, and I've lost tons of length, so to keep them neat I wear a wide headband and clip the back up in a claw. Management has largely ignored them, and the only patient/family comments have been positive. As others have said, being able to project capability and competence is most important. Otherwise, being as clean and neat as whatever your job requires is the rest of it. So far, even in south central Arkansas, people have been pretty accepting. Either that or their mamas taught em if they didn't have anything nice to say, to not say anything!!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I've been using some citronella essential oil in my acv rinses too, that seems to help w Mosquitos. Idk, I have had one tick this spring but it was on my leg.

Fuzzy looks so unprofessional! How do I fix this?

Dread Maintenance

Hey chica...all I can say is me too! I'm an RN in a busy ICU, so you know the hair needs to at least appear to be under control!! I usually wear a wide headband which helps give a smooth look around the face, then catch the sides/back up in a big claw clip and go. It's not nearly long enough to do any cool wrapping up in itself or braiding yet, but so far, that is how I manage. I have used the aloe SE suggests a few times with decent results. It's tough to find the happy medium between being a new dreadling and keeping up a professional appearance, but with positive energy and loving intention we can do it!! Luck to you, and peace.

Dread Maintenance Occurance - Honest Usage on this Site

Dread Maintenance

I don't think beads count. I am at almost five months from backcombing, and have lots of great locking going on. I have what looks like to me more fuzz and loose hair than lots of folks in similar stages, and just wondered if there is more maintenance going on than what gets talked about, know what I mean?
