scalp drama and new dreads

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Hi everyone,

so its been about a month into the dreading process (neglect, natural, watever u wana call it).

and i notice that my scalp is super itchy and flaky. ive always had some flaking and minor itch but it really wasn't a problem before. As im typing this i realize that i have added salt to my last 3 washes and maybe thats the reason for the extra itchy and flakeyness. I currently wash with about 1tbsp of bs, 1 tsp of salt, 1/2 gal water, 10 drops of tea tree and rosemary. I have been trying to spray a mixture of teatree and rosemary instead of scratching and it helps bit the itch comes right back. Ill try next wash to leave out the salt and see if it helps. Any tips would really help alot...ive stopped to scratch like 5 times while typing this...its driving me craaaazzzy!

also, if i wash every 2 days i feel like i should be fine, but because my dreads are so new (they are coming along great by the way...alot faster than i was anticipating which is awesome!) im worried about washing too often because i dont want to undo/prevent any tangles. Is every 2 days too much washing? right now im uncomfortable by day 3 and miserable by day 4, which is when i wash (sometimes i wash day 3).

thanks fam!!

Henna & Dreadlocks

Introduce Yourself

I have been using henna on my hair on a while now and Knottysleeves got it absolutely right. Henna is great for your hair, making the individual strands thicker and stronger because the karotin in henna binds to them. No ill effects can come from henna as long as it is 100% pure (body art quality). The only instance where it can do any harm is if someone has an allergy. There is a severe allergy to henna that is found among people of a certain descent (i forgot the details) and it is an extremely rare condition. If i remember correctly its more prevalent in males and harmful to young children if they have the allergy. The info is on the website Knotty linked for you. That is where i got my henna from actually. They have a certain type of henna (on the site) that is finely milled, so it is "good for dreadlocks", but i would have to imagine alot would get trapped inside still. Oh and its GREAT for you scalp and will even kill fungus on the skin. When i was using henna my scalp never felt better and no flakes for a while, so thats a nice bonus.

Long term effects of henna are thick, strong, shiny hair. The hair is also protected from uv sun rays so its like having permanent sun screen on your hair. Henna is permanent so its big commitment. Dont count on it fading, and you cant bleach over it (the bleach will lift the color from your hair, but wont touch the henna, leaving it a light orangy color at lightest) You can use regular hair dyes over henna.

Sounds like your hair can benefit alot from henna because it will make it stronger, but take into account the cons. Also be careful because you really have to glob it on, which adds quite a bit of weight to your head. If your locks are weak make sure to take some of the weight off them somehow while the henna is in.

If you have a question feel free to ask me =)

There is a great forum on that site thats worth checking out and the lovely ladies there really know their stuff!

bentonite clay

Dread Maintenance

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has used bentonite clay on their dreads. I use it as a facial mask but i haven't used it on hair before. It can be drying unless followed up with a conditioner, but since my hair is more oily, im thinking it might encourage my hair to start forming some tangles. I just started neglect method.

Hi everyone! what do u think TNR or neglect?..

Introduce Yourself

Great advice. i checked out the time lines and both ways look great, but i feel the calling to go natural. Thanks so much to everyone for the advice and compliments! I took all your kinds words into consideration, and (as silly as it sounds) i just couldn't leave the tnr in. It just felt wrong to me. I know leavin them in makes sense and is basically the same as neglect, but like i said, it just didn't feel right. Sooo after a few hours I got pretty much all of them out. Im much happier now, even though it dose'nt look like dreads yet.Much love <3

check out the timeline forum and have a look at some photos of the twist and rip timelines

i have only just started my first dread journey (natural) so i cant talk from experience. though i think checking out the timelines would be helpful for you

from what i can tell the twist and rip sections will come a fair bit undone as part of the process but it can just help to "organise" the sections so to speak

u sectioned randomly do you think your hair woulde do any difgferent? maybe 1 section might be less recrangal more octagon and another less round more crescent shaped but in the end theyre gonna just go wild anyway so come on stop second guessing yourself anmd lets go swing from the trees talk to the animals and just be free of worry

I just want to clarify here. I don't feel guilty because someone made me feel guilty about it. It's about me not being happy with the method i chose to start with.

thanks ashley for your response =) i just wanted to add that I feel like my hair would do a better job with the sections than i did, and ultimately it would look better...not sure whether this is true or not

Hi everyone! what do u think TNR or neglect?..

Introduce Yourself

Hey everyone!

I never formally introduced myself wen i recently joined! I'm glad I found this site before I decided to give dreads another try. First time was a disaster cuz i used wax and they nvr locked up! It was soo gross too...ick. I got discouraged and didn't try again til now.

So i started my locks with twist n rip. Its a lil over a month later and im not too happy wit my sectioning. I know the point of TNR is to control the sections but i kind of half a$$ed the sectioning and i got all different shapes and sizes now (most are rectangular). I think its cool that its all different, but since my sections aren't even, I feel that i should have just neglected. I'm thinking I should have let my hair do its own thing instead of trying to make it a certain way. I guess I'm feeling some kind of strange TNR guilt........didn't see that coming! I also really dont like how some of them look like braids. Will my sections change at all or are they staying like this? Is TNR enough like neglect where the end result will be almost the same? Do u guys think its worth undoing and neglecting?

Thanks =)

How much will my locks thinken up??

General Questions

Hey everyone! So I'm just curious here.I have alot of hair. Before the locks, I had layers and my hair has been thinned. I'de say at least 1/3 of my hair has been thinned out. I have about 50 new dreads. Alot of them are small. My question is about how much thicker do you think they will get. Is 50 dreads usually on the chunkier side? You think they will get noticeably thicker on top or will the whole dread thicken up?Love and light
