Problem with new locks

General Questions

you could wear a head band to keep them back, like a simple black one or something of the sort; it should keep them back enough to hide the frizzness, maybe use a little water to mist them up enough to weigh them and the stray hairs down so they aren't all over the place. my fiance and I both use bandanas to tie ours back because it's not that stretchy bidness that keeps sliding off and less tight/constrictive than an elastic band, fold one up and see if will work for ya

Organic locking on super long hair

Dreading Methods

you need to get all the stuff that the old poo's leave in, like conditioners and smelly stuff, so you would want to us a dread or deep cleaning poo to use, or a lot of people on this site like the stuff from http://shop.dreadlockshampoo.com I haven't tried it but i'm looking forward to ordering some soon. my wife and I have mostly used bs, but we have used a couple of local handmade soap bars that they said were natural and organic, some people like dilluted dr bronners, i think it works for those who do not have hard water, I have used the knotty boy and dreadhead stuff before, save your money and go elsewhere, kb is ok, but not worth the money, dhhq was just terrible, i hated washing with it and could not wait to be out of it.

I would recommend a sea salt spray before if your going to do rip 'n' twist, just gives it a little more texture, but from my experience in my case, i did r'n't and it helped get started some but most of it fell out and redreaded on it's own, my wife did her's natural with out separating unless they pull or something, her's a lot thinker than mine in the back, but she ties her hair back a lot too for work, so that may add to it as she also has a lot of loose hair on top from being tied back so much, I prefer to keep mine in a tam to tieing them back, but a tail isn't to bad sometimes, she used a bandanna instead of an elastic band so it doesn't cut in as much and cause a lot of weak spots.

your scalp will adjust over time to how you wash, i have found that after a year of washing, i have been able to do so less frequently, personal preference, some will say never go more than a week, if it starts to get itchy or uncomfortable, time to rinse or wash, you can also use pepperment sprays to help itchyness if its a problem

i have swam after 2 or 3 days with out a problem in a cholrine pool, but ocean water is supposed to be great for dreads so you may even be doing your self a favor.

Is it okay to use vegan shampoo?

General Questions

I would do like SE said and get the big thing of bs; do you use the acv aswell? that could also have an effect on your scalp and dandruff as the bs could be overly drying out scalp.

Frizzy dreads

General Questions

I wear a tam when my hair is a mess, but it seems like its effected by my mood, so when i'm in good spirit my dreads look good too, so maybe, more positive vibes in your life, better than any nasty wax you could glob on your head. I have tried all of it before, back when i was young and ignorant, wanted it all fast and easy, but dreads are not fast nor are they easy if your impatient or overly vain and concerned with vanity, because its more than a fashion, its not for hair products, and all the ones you can buy are generally overpriced propaganda tools to lure in people who don't know better with flashy websites and flash animations to make them seem like real cool dudes, you know, the real cool dudes who says your his best friend if you buy this stuff from him, and don't tell anyone who you got it from if something goes wrong.

Is it gross to not wash your dreads after sweating?

Dread Maintenance

the excess salt from the sweat might help with new growth to dread up, but you want to keep things from getting gross or greasy; you can also rinse with just water if you need

Friend thinks I should cut my hair, says they smell 'unpleasant'

Help! Save My Dreads

i would opt for a deep clean, baking soda and acv; the problem with baking soda not rinsing out completely shouldn't be a factor if you rinse well enough; dr bronners was always a no go for me, made my hair feel crazy weird, no idea why. but yeah man, bs and acv, then get them good and dry, if you can't smell them, they don't smell; my uncle said he could see bugs crawling in my hair the last time he saw us, pretty insulting, and I totally do not have freaking bugs man, some people are just dicks and talk shit, and sometimes 2 people throw their poop at the same door, could just be they see it as an easy target to bitch about and cut you down

Girls with dreads

Life Issues Facing Dreads

my fiance decided to dread her hair after i started mine because she really liked them and was sick fighting her hair naturally wanting to dread, but she still gets criticized, people try to force her to tell them that i made her dread her hair, family members have told her they think i forced her to dread her hair to make her ugly so no one else would want her, pretty aweful and hurtful to both of us, and we could just follow suit and insult them back, fight and argue with a stone wall minded person who would never change their opinion of us anyway, so we ignore it and go along our, that seems to make people more upset to know that their insults and negativity can't bring us down, although Amy has put a few people in their place, more so about how they should stop being such a judgemental dick and worry less about what we're doing and work a little harder on being a better person for yourself

Positive Reactions?

General Talk

Mostly I have just noticed a lot people stair, but I have larger stretched ears, tattoo's and piercings so i've been used to that for years, but something so unexpected happened tonight, some guy that i have never met before was walking by and looked at me and said "your awesome! I mean, i really dig your style man" I'm not really used to hearing positive things and people being nice so I had no idea what to say at first, but it was great to hear something nice. We've really ran into more people interested in how we "make" dreads, which is sort of fun to get to explain to people all about dreads and the truth about so many misconeceptions, like that dreads are gross and dirty and can't be washed, lots of people seem shocked to hear that I use baking soda and acv to wash my head. through out life we will always have to encounter and overcome ignorance and intolerance, dread or not, but i guess that's the way life goes

Ponytail while dreading (job)

General Talk

my fiance uses a bandana to tie hers back for work, its not because she has to, but because she cleans houses and wants to keep it out of her face, she seperates them so they dont become one huge congo, but the restricted movement means that new growth has a chance a harder time working its was into the dreads so you might get more loose hair on top, but maybe sleeping in a tam would help? if you could wear a tam while working that would be a good deal too.

help white stuff

General Questions

Sounds like to much salt build up, salt leaves a white residue and it sounds like you overused it a bit, but it can happen to anyone, and could be anything; we had to use a burts bees bar to wash a couple times and i have no problem with it but my fiance had some left over unpleasantness until we did the bs/acv. you should chill on the salt sprays and wash with bs for a little bit than let it do its thing, stop trying to speed up the process so much and enjoy the journy
