Question about t&r

Introduce Yourself

JESSICA EVA said:

absolutely! here is one of my dreads at 1 month, and then another dread that was 3 months. in time the loose hairs lay down on top of the twisty part. they end up wrapping around and pulling loops and bubbles back into the dread. my dreads are 5 months old now and look totally untwisty for the most part. they will also get WAY fatter. so don't worry if they look thin. the 3 month old dread in the picture is at least twce the size in now. as long as it's not going to unwind and come undone, you're good. most of mine were twisty looking, and i never ever had any come loose on me so i wouldn't worry about correcting your technique.
Awesome jessica! My tnr dreads are only about 3 weeks old, and I knew that they would look less woven as time went on, but that pic is a great illustration of the change! Thank you! :D

Drying your Dreads...

Dread Maintenance

lol, lol, lol, just the word "shamwow" makes me crack right up, I can't explain it :D but it sounds perfect for wrapping wet dreads. I live in Canada, so I know how you feel tara lol I squeeze as much excess water out as I can, wrap them up for about 10 or 20 min, and blow dry intermittently like how SE recommends, takes me about an hour tops, total (my hair goes about halfway down my back). And like Panterra says nooo going to bed on damp dreads! Can lead to bad things! Eep!

Dread Heritage

History and Religious Significance

Potatoes and jalapenos. Wow. Hahahaha I've got a bit of potato in me too, being 50% Irish o.O My mum's side is harder to tell, they're French, but Quebecois isn't really an ethnic group (lol arguable I guess) I think they came over from northern Europe? I've got blonde hair blue eyes and a hell of a temper if that's any indicator... lmao! :D Great thread!!!

Introduce Yourself

Everyone has their own opinions and misconceptions about pretty much everything. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and feelings. If they want to take it to such an extreme that they will make you feel miserable about wearing your hair a certain way, probably not worth keeping them around.I am a girl, I'm caucasian, I have dreadlocks, but by no means are these the most important facts about me. My friends and family understand that. I've been lucky so far, the reactions I get from the people closest to me are either positive or neutral, like oh, you got dreadlocks. lol They don't have to like your dreadlocks. They don't have to understand your dreadlocks. You're still you. The people who love you should get that. Don't fret, lady :DPeople will judge you on far more than your hair in your lifetime, don't let it get to you. As long as you do what feels best for you, you're on the right path :D Much love!

soap free and clean as can be

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Brown sugar! Great idea! Thank you moonheart! I myself still need to use a super mild shampoo for my hair, I'm trying to slowly train my scalp to being washed less frequently so that it gradually stops overproducing oils. I tried the baking soda rinse maybe twice, both times my scalp and neck and shoulders became bright red and blotchy and stinging, and I didn't even use a whole lot of baking soda.
On my body I use water as much as possible, only using mild organic soap when and where necessary (underarms, etc) but not frequently. I find a nice organic moisturizer and a clean cloth does the trick better than soap for most of my body.

soap free and clean as can be

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I had a lovely customer in her 60's that I'd pierced a couple of times, and she had the best complexion I'd ever seen, even skintone, hardly a wrinkle on her. I asked her what her secret was, and she said she NEVER used soap. Just cool water and moisturizer. At this point my skin was looking better than it had when I'd been playing with makeup in my teens, but still not as nice as pre-makeup phase. I stopped using soap, organic or otherwise, and followed the lady's advice. Presto. All my sensitive skin issues vanished :D

I think besides the harshness of soap, when we over-clean our bodies and hair, we strip away the oils that are necessary which our bodies produces naturally, either leaving our skin dry or causing overproduction of oils from skin that is overcompensating.

On my face and body I sometimes use extra virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer, and if I need a bit of exfoliating some used coffee grounds rubbed VERY gently on the skin do the trick for me (as strange as that sounds!) :D

Prejudice, Snap Judgements, and Dreadlocks

General Questions

I absolutely agree with knottysleeves. People will judge you on far more than your hairstyle in your lifetime, it doesn't matter. Do you really want friends/ employers/ people in your life that will judge your worth by your hairstyle? Myself, never. Do what feels right for you always. :D One thing though, from the information on this site I hear that a crochet needle is not at all a beneficial way to start or maintain dreads, check out the dread methods page here before you start k? Much love!
