How to cut my dreadlocks

General Questions

i have done twist and rip - several times. They always just end up coming unraveled and falling out :( Like I said, I really have tried. I even backcombed a few sections but it came unraveled after a few washings too. It is such a disappointment because I thought my hair would be so easy to lock. It is very thick and coarse and wavy. And it's so grown so long over 2 years. I've always had very short hair and this was my first attempt at long hair since high school. As far as the hike goes, it's about a 6 month hike with chances for a real shower and shampoo only about once a week so I feel it will be more sanitary and easier to keep clean and much easier to find TICKS in short hair. I can't imagine trying to look for ticks with dreadlocks, lol. Thanks for the advice on using the oils and conditioners. Best to all of you on your journeys. Wish mine had turned out differently.

How to cut my dreadlocks

General Questions

My 2 year anniversary of dreading will be June 17. Sadly my hair just doesn't want to lock. In 2 years I have about 12 solid hard dreadlocks. The rest of my hair has continued to look just like it looked the first week I stopped brushing it. I have come here for advice and have done all the things suggested. I have sprayed with salt water. I have used only baking soda and ACV for washes. I've tried washing more, I've tried washing less. I've gone to the beach and swam in the ocean several times lately as it's gotten warmer. I've used beads, I've used wraps. I've used the baking soda paste to try and damage it. I've used the lock up gel. I really am sick of it all. I've walked around for 2 years looking like a homeless person, lol who just doesn't take care of her hair. I really wanted it to work and I feel like I've really tried hard, but now I'm done. So I have no idea how to cut this mess out of my hair with all these huge clusters and bumps which are inconsistent since they are random and other parts of my hair are still normal and rather healthy looking. Also I plan a long-distance hike on the Appalachian Trail next spring, so I'd have to cut it for that anyway. Help please!

Is it not meant to be for me?

Exactly,it is VERY drying. My scalp is paying the price even though it is helping my hair. But it was a last resort for me. Definitely not recommended for just anyone!!! I've done it 3 times over the last 2 months and I still have parts of my hair that are silky and shiny. Damn my healthy hair, lol!

The paste is just a paste made with baking soda and water. It was suggested by Panterra (read the whole thread) because i was going on a year with no locking yet. I was desperate and thinking of giving up.

Thank you!!! Also I was noticing how long it's gotten in a year. My profile pic was taken about 2-3 mos. in and now look at it!!

Well, thought I should update since I've made a lot of progress thanks especially to Panterra's paste idea. Got lots of knotting going on. Here's some pics. Let me know what you think. It's been a long year with little progress but it's finally happening!!!

Yes Panterra suggested I try a paste one time, maybe twice to see if that would help. So today was my first attempt.

Ok, I put the BS paste on. It was so gross lol. My hair is drying now and it feels very dry and frizzy so I'm sure that's a good thing. I put about 5 beads in different sections. I had some very small wooden beads that I had used for jewelry. So we'll see how it goes from here!

OMG, thank you all so much for your encouragement and support. It means so much. I'm going to try everything you suggested because at this point I've gone so long I have nothing to lose, right?

To James Turk - by giving up I mean yes I would just brush it out or go get it cut short or something. I've always had fairly short layered hairstyles. To answer your question about drying, I had been letting it air dry, but recently I started using my hair dryer because I had read on here somewhere that it might help damage it more to help it lock up sooner.

Ok, Panterra I'm going to try your paste idea lol!!! It sounds horrible but I'll do it. And I'll also put some beads in. I don't understand how the beads work because I thought your hair had to be able to move to lock up and if it's in beads then it can't move. But everybody is telling me to put beads in so I will. I have some beads because I use to make some jewelry so I'll use those. I have one month till my one year of no brushing no combing, so we'll see what happens!

I have put beads in but they always fall out. Where do I put them? In the 2 sections that are kind of matted? I just started sleeping with the wool about 2 weeks ago. I thought it might be helping because the second section happened right after I started but nothing since then. I have stopped using the dread shampoo since it wasn't helping anyway. I used it like the BS wash. I just mixed it with water and poured it over my hair. But it's so expensive I don't want to use it if it's not helping so I went back to to the BS and salt. I put 1/3 cup of BS in a gallon of water with 2 Tablespoons of sea salt. Been doing that for several weeks. I just use a splash of ACV in about a half gallon of water but I can stop if that will help.

Heather I did try TnR a couple of times but they fell out.
