Dread Maintenance?!

Dread Maintenance

Sounds exactly like mine. I did t&r 8 months ago and its crazy how many changes they go through. I still have ends in the very front that are loose and like my regular hair but it seems like they are finally starting to dread right. But basically my dreads started out nice and long..I've lost over half of my hairs length..they bunched up for awhile and looked like clumps at one point. I was freaking out..but now they finally look like real dreads. They are short little nubs. Oh..I also had a kind of "empty" spot too on the back of my head but like SE said, it will fix itself..especially when the dreads you have get thicker. I was getting so angry with my hair between months 4-6..I even considered combing them out because they just looked so bad. I will post up a whole entry with pictures of my journey so far eventually so other t&rs can see the changes. Whatever you do..do not comb them out, re twist and rip, backcomb..or anything else you may think of. Just leave them alone and I promise it will work out. I started out with very thin very straight hair..So I know it'll work for anyone.

How often and how do u wash your head ?

Dread Maintenance

I've been washing mine everyday since I started. Maybe that's a reason they look the way they do but oh well. My hair looks really greasy if I go without washing it and because I still have my bangs in the front it's really noticable.

General Questions

Thanks guys!..This all makes me feel alot better. I guess I just need to come to this site more instead of listening to people who don't really know much about dreads. Or judging my own dreads by looking at people I see around town who have dreads that look really great.. maybe theirs are just really mature. Who knows. Anyways..I will keep them and see how they grow out. :)

General Questions

Hey guys..I really don't see how this could be normal and alot of people are saying my hair doesn't look right and is "crazy"..and I agree. It looks like a rats nest. All of the locks in the back have shrunk so much..probably lost atleast 50% of length..but the ones on the sides in front are still long and hardly knotted up. The ones in back are not only short, but also fat, twisty, and bulky. They are not thin and straight like they were before and since they are so twisty my hair looks puffy, curly, and just all around terrible. They look folded up into themselves and alot of the dreads are unknotted at top, huge knot ball in middle, not knotted on bottom. Will they ever lay back the way they should? Lie straight down and lose some of their crazy kinks and folds? Should I comb them out and start over? Does anyone have any pictures of their own dreads like this? Any advice would help. I knew from the start they would get nuts..and I don't need them to be perfect..but I would like to atleast know that they will eventually look decent. Other people on here who started their dreads at the same time as I did don't seem to be having this issue .Thanks guys :)

Still unraveled in front..but possibly too knotty in back! Help?

General Questions

Well I only just started using the baby shampoo about 2 weeks ago..this problem has been going on for 2 months so it can't be just the shampoo. But yea..I may switch to the baking soda rinse anyways. JahWillProvide said:

Still unraveled in front..but possibly too knotty in back! Help?

General Questions

No..I sleep on my side actually and I thought maybe thats why the sides never knotted. And I try to never touch the sides of my hair at all and even yell at my son when he tries to haha. Well I use to always use dr. b's shampoo but it turned my entire tub white with residue and there was white gunk in my hair from it too. Maybe the water here just doesnt go well with it? I always diluted it 12 to 1 like the bottle says..so recently I have been using baby shampoo because someone on here had said that they use it. Since then the white stuff is gone. But the baby shampoo can't be the reason for the sides not knotting because the sides have been this way for atleast 2 months now. So who knows! Haha. I might try twist and ripping them again. I'm glad you guys think my crazy loops will settle down eventually though. soaringeagle said:

Still unraveled in front..but possibly too knotty in back! Help?

General Questions

Well my dreads are now 4 and a half months old..started with t&r. The dreads on the side of my head are now completely unraveled on both sides. They've been this way for the last 2 months with no improvement. I have no idea what to do..it seems like nothing will help them..my hair is just too straight. I'm beginning to think that I need to re twist and rip or backcomb, even though I know everyone says its pointless. The dreads in the back however are looking alittle too knotty..in the pictures you will see that every dread in the back has huge loops and knots..they look like one giant rats nest..not seperate lovely dreads. Will they ever calm themselves and loosen up? I know 41/2 months is still just the start but I just wonder if my hair is ment for dreads. Haha. I love them still.. even the huge loops..but I really just want to be sure they'll sort themselves out somehow and look like real dreads. Any advice? Thanks :)

TnR Knowledge

Dreading Methods

Mine are t&r and tomorrow will be 4 months. I just took a few quick pictures to add on here. They're up right now..maybe later I will upload some pictures of them when they are down and free. As you can see the sides and tops are still really loose and have come pretty much unraveled. :)

Unraveled.

General Questions

Okay so I know that it is very normal for new dreads to come loose and unravel at the ends at roots..but right now I am about 2 and a half months in and just last night and today I have noticed a few dreads are completely unravled from root to tip without a single knot left in them. (I started with twist and rip) Is this okay still? Should I twist and rip them again a little bit? Or backcomb? I Just don't want the unravled hair to get caught in another dread and get congos that way. The back of my head is super knotted and alot of them look really good and like they will never come unraveled so I don't know why the ones on the sides of my head are like this. Well any advice will be appreciated. Thanks:)

Starting my dread journey...

Introduce Yourself

Another new twist and rip girl..yes!! I can't wait to see your pictures and compare mine with yours :) I am alittle over 2 months in. I am sure you know that soon they will come loose and big strands of hair will come completely out..but I guess my advice is just using beads to pull the strands back in and make them look a bit nicer. I am excited for you :)
