Burning Your Dreads

Dread Maintenance

i've seen this done more often with african twist style braids, after the braid is finished the outer is singed like S.E said "quickly and then rubbed down" to remove any hair ends sticking out and to acheive a smoother finish.

Wouldnt recommend it for anything but reallly mature dreads....maybe?

white people with dreadlocks

History and Religious Significance

you will not convince anyone from those type of sites that dreadlocks are not solely black.

bottom line for them-black was the first man therefore black "invented" dreadlocks all else copied.

strange as it seems white people invented the term "dreadlock".

so if they truly want their culture bloody call it by it's correct name they are "locks".

only rasta have "dreadlocks"

the original movement called themselves "dreads" and allowed their hair to lock up due to beliefs, the white upperclass though they looked dreadful, the movement called themselves dreads,

therefore the locks of the dreads became dreadlocks.

answer me this, if it is black only hair style how come the world in general had never seen or heard of it before bob marley surely all blacks wear their hair in their traditional style.

utter crap!!

block these people from your ears they deserve none of your time till they grow up

Hello from Ohio

Introduce Yourself

yeah there is a guy on the site that extended his dreads with his late brothers dreads, a really moving gesture, so they can be "re-attached"

Jamie said:
Thanks for all the kind words guys it means a lot to me. Now I have a serious question. What if I cut my hair now and wore it in some other hairstyle for a year or however long. This may sound weird but could I feasibly use my own dreads as extensions if I ever wanted to go back or is that just an absurd idea?

oldie but newbie with prolly lots of familiar questions ;)

Introduce Yourself

how often should I wash? When you feel dirty

do I only backcomb once, and then let nature do the rest? Yes

am I supposed to periodically backcomb the dreads to tighten them up more? No

am I supposed to 'palmroll' each dreadfor 30 seconds each day (whatI read somewhere) No

after the summer of taking the kids to the pool, will my frizzies be toned down?, and I appear a goddess to those when I return to school in the fall??? Maybe, everyones kinda different on how long it takes for the frizz to settle

Hope that helps ya:)
And welcome to the site

Is there a good drying method

Introduce Yourself

if it's warm weather just go outside and shake like a dog(watch out for flying beads, lol) then air and sun dry, and if it's taking too long try using a shamwow,chamois,micro-fibre towel and squeeze the water out with the towel.

any thing for itchy scalp?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

i've always had itchy scalp too, lately i've been doing as Panterra(thanx) suggested and spot treating with peppermint oil. Works great just use cottonball or tissue soaked in pepermint oil and rub it on scalp on itchy spot(may sting if skin is red,but ok) about 5 to 10 min later itch is gone for the day.
