Just the Tips

General Questions

If you're looking for wispier ends, I'd try combing out a half inch or so on the end. I cut one once, (at a slight angle) and just kinda played with the end/broke it apart a little, and its wispy now.

Just the Tips

General Questions

No, I tried the body splash, and boiling them (with the careful help of some friends), but like I said, I'm going to be cutting them (I'll remember to give the line plenty of room, Thanks Baba!) and I'm happy with that decision, I'm more wondering how to color them for the winter before I chop them.

Just the Tips

General Questions

they may have some wax still in them, but there is a definite line in each one that goes from nice and fluffy to hard and waxy. I've tried some of the wax removal techniques on the ends, and they have helped, but there still rock hard, and hold water for hours after the rest of each dread has dried.

Just the Tips

General Questions

So when I started my dreads 3 years ago, I used wax (this was a couple of months before I found this site) since then I've stopped and decided to let them grow out and chop the waxy part instead of chopping them all off at the time. I've finally decided that by spring they'll be long enough to chop the bottom 3-4 inches of wax off. That being said, I would love to have some fun with them this winter. I'm thinking about darkening them and bleaching just the tips (bottom inch or so). I wouldn't think of using any harmful chemicals, but since its just the bottom part that will be cut off in a few months anyways, I don't have too many qualms against it. I've never dyed my hair before so I really have no idea what I'm doing. I've heard that coffee works to darken them, but how do you use it? Do I just soak them in a pot of coffee for a while? Also how would I whiten up the tips? Thanks for any and all help!

wax vs. no wax

Dread Products

I started my dreads with wax about 3 years ago, after finding out how bad the wax made them (and stumbling on this site) I tried getting the wax out. It kinda worked...instead of chopping them off and starting over, I decided to let them grow out more and chop off the waxy part when the time came. Now the bottom half of my dreads are hard and stiff, while the root half is nice and fluffy. I kinda want to chop the waxy part off, but they just got to the length where I can tie them back, so I may wait a little while longer before I hack them in half.

Dread-sickles

General Questions

Hey guys,

so I live way up north here in Minnesota, and Uff-da, its been cold out latley. now normally I shower/wash my dreads before i take my dog for a walk. Normally in summer I just let em dry in the wind, but this time a year they usually turn into cold hard dread-sickles before i'm out the door. my question is with all the freezing/expanding of the water in them, will that do any harm to my knots? Thanks for any help.

Dog ear dreads

General Questions

I originally backcombed and waxed, but this is one I combed out and just t&r'ed without wax. their pretty long now, and I gave up on tucking them back about a month ago because it didn't help.

soaringeagle said:
refresh my memory u backcombed no wax no crochet right?
theyre just short? u think tucking em instead of letting em hang might have made the roots wanna grow back but when they hang down they twist 1/4 way so they instead of going back stick out? i think maybe if u dint tuck em all the time they will self correct as long as theres no crochet or wax stiffness

i think the roots are used to being pushed back so when thry hang they hang weird

Dog ear dreads

General Questions

Hey everyone!

So I have a couple of dreads right around my ears that tend to stick straight out a few inches before falling normally. I have tried to tuck them behind my ears but they always end up working their way out and sticking out. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, besides they look a little dorky to me, and a little bit too much like my Puggle's ears haha. Has anyone ever had this problem, and do you have any suggestions?

Thanks a ton!
