what are your dreads like?

General Talk

I have 36/7 dreads. Ones in the process of combining with another so its like one up top and two at the bottom. Its cool, I dig it. Mine are all diff sizes since I did it natural, have one skinny one near the back and a short baby forming near the front of my face.. and this ridiculous unincorporated piece that likes to stick straight up! Some of the roots mix into others. They're all pretty loopy too -ok real loopy, like myself :) and the ends are still soft so they just make little curls. Love it! (well except that little piece that sticks straight up in front. thats pretty goofy)

lice and fleas on dreads

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

You kinda need to be careful if using DE in the home though. Its real bad for your lungs so you shouldnt inhale it. I personally dont use it in the house (i love my lungs) so I just sprinkle it outside in the garden and directly on my kitties. Also on friends who catch internal parasites! :) So ya, I'd use it directly in the hair for lice, just be sure to use it safely.

Aloe Vera texturizer????

Dread Products

i just put some aloe in my hair today since i gotta stand in front of babylon and wanted to tame the frizz. I was a bit worried about the conditioning effects, and if it would dry funky like with residue or stickiness, but thus far (like 2 hours lol) it seems pretty nice with neither of the aforementioned problems, and my hair doesnt seem any softer. I only used it on the very top & front but it sure tamed the flyaways and i got some pretty crazy ones. As for the TIGI product I've never tried it, but im not big on store-bought products anyway. So ya, conditioning will setback progress. But on the other hand, everyone has different texture hair, like my hairs always been really dry, and ill sometimes add some scented oils (arabic oud) to the ends and i don't think it affects my hair negatively. on the contrary, makes me smell great :)

Trying to convince your parents to let you get dreads? Here's the PowerPoint that worked for me :)

Dreads in the Family

what a great powerpoint! i can see how this would help convince parents they're acceptable, especially the points that its *your* hair & you can learn from your own mistakes-dont parents love to point that out? and how nice to post it so others can use it with minor adjustments... Glad yer able to join the locked :)

18 on the 19th, i turned 24 on the 19th!! wish you couldda had a happy b-day too :*( in the meantime, i would go with baba's suggestion and try the aloe. i've got court coming up myself and worry about how the locks areperceivedbut i've been in front of the judge a couple times and think that my impeccable dress and polite speech overrides my hair. so try offsetting your wild hair with super conservative clothing (i raid my momma's closet since i dont do conservative clothes, but maybe you could raid a friends/relatives closet?) hope all goes well with you... and DAMN is there a worse place than the local drunk tank!?!?!?

is Nederland Colorado still a dreadlock mecca???

General Talk

I was up there not this past summer, but the one before, cruisin around colorado and ended up in nederland for a bit. I didn't see any dreadies, but the hippy-vibe'sdefinitelythere. Another cool hippy town around there is ward. An older lady told me about it, as the last hippy stronghold and when I cruised through saw a bunch of broken down painted dusty old hippy buses lining one side of the street. such a beautiful part of the country. especially coming from flat crappy south texas-wish i was in Co.

wwoofing abroad, or in general

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

yeah, I also worry about the state of our country and what can be done to protect ourselves. personally i think silvers a pretty alright bet since it's a commonly used metal and should hold some value especially if, like you mentioned, there is a crash. but you know theres always that small problem that you can't eat silver in an emergency :) i really like the ideas orlov has- he's inspired me and my bf into looking into sailboats here in this coastal town ive found myself stuck in. they're a much cheaper way to own a "house" but its great since that one can get the hell outta dodge whennecessary (plus no fuel required!) for a couple like us in their mid 20s it seems unrealistic to think i'll ever afford a regular house, and i dontparticularlywant one anyway. just wish one of us knew how to sail! i hope that you too find some inspiration in his blog.-one love-

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

Hey Aya, check out this blog its from a former soviet citizen who is warning americans of the similarities between soviet russia before its collapse and the current us trends. admittedly, it's got nothing to do with wwoof but he's got different ideas about self sufficiency & is an interesting read at the very least

Putting myself out there...

Introduce Yourself

Baba Fats, you are right that police are still necessary since some folks seem to be unable to control themselves. I guess Im just dreaming up a world where we know each other, and we all maintain some sort of order over ourselves & each other because of our relationship/responsibilities to each other, instead of relying on a dedicated force of people we call police. Keyword:Dreaming! It's just that i would prefer police to protect us, not babysit us. And it is sad, but i think it is also true that it takes a disaster to bring people together, and I see the lines being drawn between the socialist tendencies and WWs. makes sense and i've never thought of them related in such a way.

It is relieving to reject some western ideals, it makes life too stressful trying to live up to those ideals anyway. As for the shaving, i found aninterestingpost on here once (which i, of course, cannot locate now) about native americans who were drafted into the US army, and those who cut their hair lost many of their tracking abilities, it actually happened so frequently that the army quit cutting the native americans hair b/c they were able to detect and sense people better with their hair. Plus, the story of samson & delilah where he loses his power when his hair is cut. I also watched this documentary about andean indians and in one of their sacred chants they mention hair being like "wires to the universe." Sorry a littleramble-y, but im so convinced that hair is capable of so much more than looking pretty on a head, when you mentioned shaving i felt a tangent coming on. anyway, best wishes to you and yer father
