If You Ever Used the Crochet Method

Dreading Methods

used hook: yes

satisfied: for the time, yes... in the long run, no.

for the time (when i started my interlocked and backcombed dreads) they were helpful in keeping the tips from unravelling. it also helped me keep a more organized look for work.

in the long run - i can see which dreads have been damaged from this (thin spots) as well as - i realized it was more work to keep hooking all hairs in - and much easier to leave them to do thier thing.. they eventually grew in to the appropriate lock)

most of my tips are now rounded - which takes forever and a couple days to fully dry.. and yes they are a bit tighter now than i would like as well.

size: 1.9mm

Going out in the woods....

General Talk

i've gotten into quite a few tick patches. if you know your going into serious tick country.. please please please do keep your head covered. that's the best advice i can give.

i use a lot of the oils suggested when washing my dreads as well. you can usually find scented soap of these scents too. i know bronners at least makes two of them.. while that hasn't been completely effective at keeping them off my body, ive not had one on my scalp. cover up, and check often..please keep in mind

"transmission is quite rare, with only about 1% of recognized tick bites resulting in Lyme disease; this may be due to the fact that an infected tick must be attached for at least a day for transmission to occur."-Lyme disease wiki.

Dread directions

Dread Maintenance

thats a pretty good sketch. honest! funny but can also get painful. couple years after some of mine were unnaturally "started" / and they are still re-sectioning themselves. no idea on the kinks. most everything not naturally formed on my head doesn't have a lot of kinks. most everything that is naturally formed does. i dont have a lot of backcombed locks tho.

Hey! New to this site, and ready to start my journey!

Introduce Yourself

welcome dani. wonderful for you to start your journey here with us :) will save you lots of time and headaches :)

i started mine when some of it was about 3-4 inches. it has been much much easier once it had grown out. mine was sectioned out and finding that my hair doesnt quite lay the same when its 5 inches as opposed to 12 inches.. so that has created some akward pulling. i guess something to keep in mind if you decide not to let them lock naturally. i would think with longer hair you would just have more hair to latch to other hairs.. and it would move and lock faster.

What do you wash with?

Introduce Yourself

most often i use baking soda/acv rinse with some scented oil in a post-rinse. if im going to be out in the woods ill use some tea tree or eucalyptus type in attempt to keep bugs and lice away. ill use some doc b's if im in a hurry or away from home for extended time.

rubberbands???

Introduce Yourself

takes about a week for my dreads to eat a rubberband.. pending on what type of band i put in and what time of year. they will melt in my hair in the summer after a couple days in the sun..

but ya.. not fun to try to get out.. im sure does a lot of other damage as well other than melting/getting stuck in the hair.

nice post

Out of curosity which is worse?....crotchet VS. Backcomb

Dreading Methods

my backcombed dreads seem to be doing fine other than a little akward pulling on occasion.. can be painful. my crochetsed dreads dont take in new growth very well and some have broken off in their weaker spots. i would feel safe to say at this point - my backcombed dreads are much more healthy.
