make up

General Talk

I used to feel so much anxiety towards my appearance. I wouldn't allow myself to leave the house without makeup on. I even took it along camping. Even if I wasn't able to shower, I was convinced my makeup was needed. I also stopped using makeup after starting my dreads. I never really made the decision to not wear it, I just stopped. It didn't feel needed anymore. My coworker put makeup on me a few months ago and when I went home my boyfriend told me I looked funny (which didn't make me feel good at all right away), he doesn't like it at all and either do I. My mom will be seeing me tomorrow for the first time in a year and a half so she hasn't seen my dreads yet. Hopefully she will be able to see how they have helped begin my transformation into a more confident, independent person. I feel like I actually get more compliments on my appearance now that I don't bother with makeup or hair products. Females that I encounter have made comments about how they think it's awesome I'm so "natural" and don't need makeup. I try to convince them that they don't either but I normally get some statement on how it boosts their self esteem. But for me, the fact that I don't need it is the greatest boost in self-esteem that I need. And the compliments from strangers never hurt either :)

Dread Shops discussion on dread tams, hats

General Talk

Google "Nilda's Knick Knacks" and you should find an Ebay seller who does handmade tams. I've bought 4 from her and they are amazing quality and very reasonably priced. She is out of CA and I've always had quick delivery and amazing products from her.

natural dreads photos or timeline ??

Dreading Methods

I've got photos from my natural dreads from the beginning up until like 9 months or something posted on my profile. I just hit the ten month mark on August 1st but haven't updated photos yet but it gives you another idea of what you can expect for yourself.

"Metalhead" and "Hippie's"

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

hey thanks for showing this band. I'm gonna check out their music for sure. I like their philosophy. My new favorite metal band right now is The Agonist. You should check them out on YouTube. If you watch some of the interviews you'd probably get a hint of what you get from Decrepit Birth.

Dreads getting fatter??

General Questions

I noticed that my dreads really started to thicken after 5-7 months. When they first formed naturally most of my dreads were super skinny and now that I am at 8 months I've noticed that alot of those skinny ones are really fattening up. I think they are collecting frizz and also joining themselves together. It's really quite an interesting process. Have a good one!

Hello

Introduce Yourself

Hello and welcome fellow minnesotan! Well I am no longer living there but spent the first 21 years of my life there but now have enjoyed the last year in sunny california. The rest of my family is still there so I will be back to visit. My boyfriend started his dreads with only a little longer hair than you say you have and his have started locking up, it's been only about 2 months for him. If you got the hair you might as well start them! No need to wait, the process is already a longish one. Good luck and enjoy the journey

Something has foiled my plan.

General Questions

You are beautiful and I don't think you should let one person's comment change your mind. Number one most important thing in life is making sure you are happy and meeting your own needs. One thing that is happening with me while on this dreading journey is that I am growing so much more confidence and can look in the mirror and be happy with myself. I finally am starting to feel like my outside appearance is refecting my inner self. Sure some people may be less receptive to people with dreads but honestly why would you want to be around someone that judges based on appearance? I also went through a period of discouragement in the beginning of my dreads but it's all part of the process. Just stay true to yourself and you can never be wrong. Good luck!

For those with conservative spouses & family..

General Talk

Thanks for sharing your story, I too have super conservative family members. I am definetely the black sheep in the family and stand out with my piercings and dreads. I still haven't had to face much scrutiny from my family because they live 2000 miles away, but I am nervous for the reactions I will inevitably face. What I don't understand is why people who are against dreads feel the need to verbalize their opinions and put down the person with dreads. I mean, I don't tell someone that I don't like their new hair color/cut or whatever it may be. Most of the time when I do get comments on my hair I don't even feel like I owe people an explanation on why I decided to have dreads, it's my decision so don't worry about it! Anyways I am rambling so I will end this now.
