Possibly restarting

Member Journals and Timelines

I'm thinking the same thing. I have a massive matted mess in the back of my head and have actually combed out a couple of the dreads. I too started with backcombing and a little of TnR. I'm going away this weekend and am really thinking of combing them out when I get back.

I've seen on here to soak them in olive oil and or really strong conditioner. I've been able to comb out about 7 of my dreads just by pulling them apart and playing with them, however, mine are only a month old.

I wish I had gone natural from the beginning..... and found this site BEFORE I started.

Good luck! :)

It's a pretty big area underneath. I have a lot of hair, very thick.

Apparently I haven't been separating right. Mostly in the back, my hair is matted in a clump with about 5 or 6 dreads combined. There is about 2 inches from the root - the matted clump - then the dreads off of that.

How do I fix it? Do I cut it to separate them?

:(

Comb out dreadlocks or keep them, that is the question

Dread Maintenance

It's so good to keep hearing from people who felt the same way at times. I don't feel like such a mess! Thank you! :)

BlasphenyBlack, that was very sweet, thank you!! I've always been a "do what you want regardless of what others think" sort of person, but for some reason I let some people get to me about this. I am getting myself back on track thanks to the people in this group! It's funny because young people, my kids friends, LOVE my dreads! ha ha ah and... I am thankful to have hair to dread! Chemo sucks!!! When I stopped chemo my hair grew like crazy!

SE, thank you. My daughter said the same thing to me today. She is one of the few who supported my decision to dread. She told me that people look because they wish they had the guts to do it and because it looks great on me. (she's pretty smart for 16) :)

I'm going to continue my dread journey and am VERY thankful that I've found this group of caring people! Thank you all again!!!

Thank you all! I needed that pep talk! I was doubting myself big time. I feel a lot better now. It's also good to know that other people go through the same thing!!
