3 1/2 months in...they've turned flat? :)

General Questions

Oh yeah, I meant to let toy know that, in my own experiences, beads are wonderful for keeping those stobborn dreads under control. The bead should be tight enough to stay on the dread, but not too tight or it could start to mold/mildew/dry rot/whatever over time.

3 1/2 months in...they've turned flat? :)

General Questions

Awwww! That sounds so much like what went on during that period of my neglect dread journey.I think those flat ones are from sleeping on them. I can only fall asleep on my right side and I noticed that quite early on. I'm almost at 10 months now. Most of the flattened locs on my right side and towards the back ended up developing very rapidly after that. Just keep doing what you're doing and they'll come together soon enough!Make sure to keep then super clean and don't over separate. I just let mine be and pulled them apart only when I absolutely had to. Once they've formed and maturered a bit, then begin tugging on each dread in all directions to separate the hairs that you feel shouldn't be in there.Happy dreading!

soap for dreads

Dread Maintenance

Wow. Good to know! I love the nonresidue bars on dreadlockssite but lately I've been using peppermint Dr. Bronner's. Eventually I'd like to have both on hand :-)

Hooping and Dread Care

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

Hello fellow dreaders!!! I have recently begun hula hooping! It's so stress relieving and it's greatexercise! I am in love! I live on the Gulf Coast and it's starting to get super hot. So hot that after about 5 minutes of hooping I am dripping sweat and my locks are soaked with sweat. I usually wash my hair every other day, sometimes every other other day, but I've heard baby dreads shouldn't get wet a lot.

Is this alright for my dreads? I usually go out a few times a day, so my hair is getting wet a lot. It's sweat, so it's salty, but I already spray a sea salt spray on them. Should I stop the sea salt spray? I usually just leave my hair down, so my dreads are usually down. I haven't really learned any styling methods that could keep my hair out of my face, at least. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Much Peace and Love,

Elle

Claire's Natural Curly Dreads

Member Journals and Timelines

Ohhh! Those are gonna be SOOOO badass! Seriously, my hair is the same way. Super curly. It's only been a month and a half and mine are already knotted up pretty well around the middle. Some have formed ends and others are still thinking about it... Even a few have begun looping and knotting at the root! Yours will look fantastic in no time!

New in dreadlocks and ive already read many topics, im confused so i need help.

Introduce Yourself

I use a super simple salt spray. You obviously need a spray bottle; mine holds about a cup of liquid. I zap almost a cup of bottled water (the thought of letting the tap water here soak in my dreads is just gross) in the microwave for a couple minutes. I put probably 3-4 tablespoons of sea salt (not table salt, not epsom salt: Sea Salt!) in the hot water and let the sea salt dissolve fully. I used a wooden spoon to stir every once and a while. When there are no particles left in the water, put it in your spray bottle (a funnel really helps with this) and shake it again. I usually shake mine up before each use.

I used to spray it on my dreads a few times a day, but it made my hair really dry, so I cut it back to once every day or two. Much better. I* use it in a few ways. I always spray some on after I get out of the shower. During maintenence, I mist on just enough at one time for it to stay damp until I pull each dread apart and palm roll it for few seconds. I do that to each dread in an area then I move on to the next. I also use it just randomly some times when I realize I haven't touched my hair in a day or two.

As for the shampoo, again, the best answer I can give you is a link to a forum post : http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/starting-dreads-nonresidue

The exact measurements I use are like, a cup of baking soda to one gallon water. I mix it up well, close my eyes, pour it all over my dreads and let it sit for like 15-20 mins. Rinse well with cool water. Put a couple capfulls of Apple Cider Vinegar in a gallon of water and repeat. Only leave this on for 2-5 minutes, though.

I did forget this, though... NO CONDITIONER! Good call

No conditioner, it will make your hair too slippery and itwon't knot up. As for the shampoo, you order it with a credit card, and it comes in the mail.

I have exactly the same hair. It's wavy/curly and super frizzy. I started mine about three weeks ago. I sectioned them off and used the twist and rip method. Then left them to do what they wanted. They didn't what to go in the direction I thought they should.

I highly suggest not brushing your hair for a few to several days while washing with a good, natural, non-residue shampoo (I got my Naked Dreadlock Shampoo Bar at Dreadlock Shampoo ). My hair would have taken so much longer to begin sectioning together how it wants to if I hadn't had super clean hair. It's only $10 and there's a bunch of different liquid and bars and a non-residue locking gel.

Wash every two to three days. Just not every day. When you shampoo, pay special attention to the places you know get more oily than other places. If your hair is greasy it's going to take sooooo much longer for the knots to hold when they get wet. I also use a sea salt and water spray and do a baking SODA and apple cider vinegar rinse once a week. Also, make sure that you get into the areas of the hair between each dread on each side. Rinse with cool, then blast with cold for a second.

All the info I know I got from wandering around here. Check out the links in the top right hand side drop down list. Just read up! Wait, too! It takes time! Mine aren't even really good looking yet, but I love them so much. It's so much easier and it's another outlet in which I can express myself in. Hope I could help a bit! Have fun in your dread journey!

new dreadlockssite youtube channel

General Talk

I'm loving this idea! I've been making dreadlock updates since I began my journey in June 2012. I've gone all natural and am loving it. SE, you were the one who told me that the way I was starting out was not optimal. After taking your advice and reading up on what other members had to say, I realized that I want my dreadlocks for the rest of my life. My mean so much to me. Watching the hair tangle together, noticing loops, really separating for the first time once they matured enough to start eating other locs, looking at each one in the mirror, etc has given me so much appreciation for the neglect/freeform/natural method! The patience I've seen myself learn is just astonishing!

I'd love to share my videos! I've spoken a lot about Dreadlocks Site in my updates as this community has really shaped my dreadhead mentality. Here's a link to my channel and my Neglect Dreadlock Journey playlist that I've put all of my progress videos on :-) I'd love to help make Dreadlocks Site the best it can be! Showing new dreadies (or those considering dreading) that you don't need wax, loc peppa or any of that nastiness is so much more powerful than just telling them!
