Dreadlocks and airport customs??

General Questions

They probably spotted the drugs on that woman right away from the body scanner. Those things are incredibly detailed so if you don't have any drugs in your hair then there will be nothing to see and nothing to worry about.

Dirty looks and negativity

General Questions

You guys are all correct I believe. I get comments ranging from "rastafarian" to "dirty hippie." I believe these comments come from a tremendous lack of knowledge about dreadlocks and their history in the world. People also often assume that I don't wash my hair. I don't take offense for the most part; I just try to educate them a bit on dreadlocks. Soaring Eagle I think is also right. Dreads are very noticeable and people may like them and just not know what to say to you about them and so they say the first thing they think of when they see them.

The only people who really have a problem with my hair is the older generations. And by that I'm talking people 60+. I don't care what they think so I usually just laugh it off. It's pretty silly that they worry about it at all.

Too much tam?

Dreading Methods

I recently stopped wearing a tam when I sleep and it is not only more comfortable, but my dreads are looking better too.

Stereotypes about dreads

General Talk

haha Valentine, we have a lot in common. I am sometimes mistaken for being high and I'm studying physics, albeit not astro. But that's a good answer, I like it.

Stereotypes about dreads

General Talk

Soaring Eagle, referring to your first reply, I think you're right. I'll think twice before I make a comment relating to a stereotype, whether it's a good or bad comment.

And Luke, that is an awesome compliment. What is better than being a free spirit??

Stereotypes about dreads

General Talk

At work and school, I often come across people who call me things such as "pothead", "rastafarian", or "dirty hippie," simply because of my hair. People ignorantly make assumptions about people with dreads when they really have no idea what they're talking about. I politely try to tell them that dreadlocks have been around for thousands of years, and that the association of dreadlocks with Jamaicans, marijuana, and Rastas is a fairly recent phenomenon. I tell them that I have nothing against smoking weed but I just choose not to smoke very much, and some people do not even believe me! Also, I explain to them that properly maintained dreads are actually very clean and healthy, only to be met with cringes and looks of disgust.

I'm just curious how many other people here come across these types of attitudes and how you have dealt with them. Also, how did such an ancient hairstyle develop such irrelevant stereotypes in America?! I would be interested in studying more about this.

The straightness!

General Talk

You might want to wait a while till your hair's longer and then try lightly backcombing. That's the only way I got mine started. If you don't go crazy with the backcombing then it won't damage your hair too much.

General Talk

Hey I just wanted to say thanks and let everyone know about sleeping with a tam. I stopped wearing it to bed about four nights ago and my loose hairs are already beginning to get locked up. Even other people are noticing a difference. I can't believe this small change is already making a difference and I'm excited to see the changes over the next month or so.
