Dealing with less than positive reactions

Life Issues Facing Dreads

So, a few weeks ago I decided to post a picture of myself on facebook, my unofficial "unveiling" for my now 4 month old dreadlocks. I got a several nice comments, but then I got a comment from an older, very conservative-minded man from my old church (to whom I have NO hard feelings for). I have always been shy and always let myself be walked on. I feel like, since having dreadlocks, I started to learn to love and stand up for myself, so I'm proud of myself for I handled the situation. I'm not trying to put myself on a pedestal or anything, I just thought I would share with you all =]

Here's how things went down:

Hopefully that's legible! If it weren't for you all, I don't think I would have been able to make it this far, so thank you all for being an inspiration to me =]

mama cloth and menstrual cups!

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

You know, it's funny, the thought of using a menstrual cup just sounded disgusting for the longest time, but ever since I've became health conscious and started looking to mother nature for answers, I really want to get one! Not to mention, I hate having to buy tampons every month! Expensive and wasteful!

The "Weed Smoking Hippy" Stereotype

General Talk

I've smoked a few times, but I simply just don't like it. I'm not sure what it is. I was at a music festival a few weeks ago and our camping neighbors offered me a hit. When I told them I didn't like it they were surprised!
There's a documentary out that I watched on netflix a year ago or so. I think it's called "Super High Me". I thought it was pretty good, even if I don't smoke =]

I don't miss not combing!

General Talk

Congrats on your dread journey! I love not having to comb my hair too! And not having to "fix" it if I'm going out anywhere for that matter.

Thickening/ adding dreads... Extensions or Wool?

General Questions

Well, hello! So, here is my situation... I had intended on beginning my dreadlock journey this week (after a friend's wedding, long story) but my hair has thinned considerably...I'm talking losing at least 1/3 of the thickness type thinning. I think it is due to the fact that I had my BS/ACV ratios off and that did something to my scalp and burned my hair, which is a bummer because this is the healthiest I've ever treated my hair in a long time (no heat, no hair products, etc). Either that or my hair could still be reacting to postpartum hormones (16months ago). My scalp isn't showing hair loss (anymore), just the thickness in general.

I sectioned my hair into braids yesterday to get a general idea of how many dreads I would have, (I've tried a TnR dread before, so I have a general idea how thick I want them to be) and I had a grand total of 15 (would-be) dreads. It looked like things would be pretty sparse.

I know my hair won't always be as thin as it is now, but I don't want to cut my almost waist long hair and don't want to wait years, or who knows how long, to begin my dread journey... But I DO want to be happy with the way my dreads look (I understand the messiness- I'm talking few, thin dreads).

So I was thinking about either getting extensions to add more hair in order to thicken them up (I dont need it for length, my hair is long enough, just thickness) or making some wool dreads to add in with my real dreads... Any thoughts or opinions?

~B

BS/ ACV before dreading

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Thanks SE! Oh and by "get dreads" I meant when I let the dreading process begin =] I'm waiting until after a dear friends wedding (in which I'm a bridesmaid) this summer to begin. I don't mind waiting, I just figure that'll be my last (unlocked) fancy do for a while so I'll just take the time in between to say goodbye to my unlocked hair =]

But my hair really wants to lock, I can tell! Whenever I comb my hair (which takes probably half an hour or so!) I feel like my hair is weeping lol. But you can guarantee after those "I do's" are said not a comb will touch my head!

BS/ ACV before dreading

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

My very first post! Woohoo!Anyways, I don't have dreads yet but I have been doing the baking soda and apple cider vinegar thing to wash my hair once a week (no other shampoo, etc) for about 2 months now and I had read that when you first get dreads you should wash your hair twice a week for the first few weeks. When I first get my dreads should I follow the twice a week advice or should I just keep doing my thing and only wash once a week? I have Caucasian, somewhat frizzy, wavy, almost waist length hair if that helps any. Also, it starts to get a lil oily after 4 days post wash.~B

i need biblical references to dreadlocks my church kicked me out for wanting to dread

History and Religious Significance

I know the OP was over 2 years ago now, but I had a somewhat similar situation happen recently (I posted a discussion a while back if you're interested) so this topic is really interesting to me.
I think a part of the problem is that the crappy "dreadheads" have screwed us other dreadheads. You know, the "dreadheads" who don't wash and therefore their hair is dirty and stinks. Just like not all "christians" are hateful, not all dreadlocks are dirty and stink. And not all dreadheads smoke weed either (that doesn't necessarily make those that DO smoke crappy, drugs are just generally frowned on by some).
A lot of people still think that dreads are dirty and associate them with drugs and weed smoking. So, I think its important that we remember that we were once ignorant about dreadlocks too (most of us anyways), and that we inform people as best as we can and hopefully abolish these preconceived notions!
But if they aren't willing to listen, you should probably just separate yourself from them (if possible). They probably aren't people you want/need in your life anyways.
"For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them. -Matthew 18:20(ESV)
So, if you feel like theres something wrong with the "church" you're going to now, you could just take a friend and worship God in your own house or back yard! Like others have said, I would love to worship out in God's beautiful earth, rather than a man-made building. Hey, Jesus preached on a mountain top and from a boat to the people on a beach! Now THAT sounds beautiful.
