Dread Noob here

Introduce Yourself

Hi. I'm a young black woman who is trying locs so that I can grow my hair out. I got my hair interlocked at my local salon. Great service and good people but after reading a bit here I've realized that there were better ways to get my hair locced without risking the damage and lost cash that I'm going through right now. I just finished retwisting my hair and trying to fix it using the method from this video but if it doesn't work out I'm just gonna wash out my locs with conditioner and oil and start over the right way. I'm glad to join this place and I hope to learn more about how to appreciate my locs. :)

Shampoos and Soaps ~ Maybe get a list started

Dread Maintenance

Not sure if they've been mentioned but I've had some luck with a shampoo bar I got from Chagrin Valley. It was the Ayurvedic Herb one. The only thing is that it can be expensive due to the shipping and handling.

dread tea

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

My place is very small and my landlord is cheap. I just wanted a tea that would make it easier to get out lint.

I would like to use one that would keep lint out of my hair. Not now, but in the future. Also, if you don't have a teapot, can you use the microwave?

Is it possible to use green tea for a dread tea?

dreading the 1st few weeks of dreading

Dreading Methods

It's hard to resist looking in the mirror, especially when there's one in your bathroom attached to the wall. I don't really freak out over my locs anymore (unless if my brother touches them I f'n hate that) but sometimes I'll give into temptation and I have to start consciously reminding myself that its a journey be patient and relax. Reading this post again has been very encouraging, especially for someone stuck in the 'burbs where everyone apparently has to look "professional" (i.e have appropriate dress code by capital's standards).

super clean dreads (safe for baby locks too)

Dread Maintenance

Not sure if this has ben asked already, but what is a good ratio for a white vinegar rinse? Currently, I make it 9 parts water to 1 part vinegar and since my locks aren't very long it comes out to 50 ml water and 450 ml white vinegar but I think this losens my hair too much. Or am I just being fussy?

I was able to find tea trea oil mixed with lavender oil online at Amazon for a decent price. Or you could check your local nutrition or health food store.

I itch at the 4 day mark of not washing my hair. So Im on a set schedule atm. Washing Thursdays and Sundays. I'll have to find tea tree after seeing what that does lol.

dreaducation, comprehensive guide to all things dready

Dreading Methods

I have an old jacket which has fake fur on the inside. Would it be possible for me to sleep on it in order to help my hair dread? Also, what's a good store to check if you want to buy a tam in person?

dreaducation, comprehensive guide to all things dready

Dreading Methods

I took out my baby dreads and decided to start over with freeforming. I think my hair is begining to dread, but the problem I have is that when I sleep the back of my hair ends up flat and I wake up with my hair looking a bit like Vegeta. Then, when I take a bath and let water get on it it's better but I know I cannot go out with my hair looking so crazy so I try pulling my hair back into shape and then doing the whole separation thing after I've oiled my scalp and hair with some olive oil and a light spray of aloe vera juice, rosemary oil, a blend of tea tree and lavender oil, grapefruit extract, and distilled water. It ends up with my hair looking like an afro which is fine for me (black woman, kinky hair) but I fear that doing so will interfere with my hair dreading. Should I just get a tam so I don't have to do that?
