Why is the community here so against maintained locs?

Dreading Methods

I totally agree with what SE said about jobs. When you go to an interview you are interviewing THEM as well. Why would anyone want to work for someone who would judge them for having dreads???

Dreading Methods

I don't judge people if they want to maintain them however they see best. But I do always feel a bit confused when people are like "I must have my locs neat and perfect or I won't be able to do good in my career because people will judge me based on my appearance!"

It just seems like the total opposite of what dreads are about for me. But I guess people get them for different reasons.

taking the loooong road.

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

Like SE said, I never sold anything because I never had anything.

But yeah, I've sort of done this. Not walking though. Back in 05 I got the travel bug after reading some books (The Beach was one of them) and watching some travel movies. I don't know why it had never occurred to me before this time, but I devoted all my energy to saving up money to do whatever I wanted from there on out. I worked pizza delivery for almost 4 years and in 2009 I had tons of cash saved up from my tips, so I bought a plane ticket to thailand and just left. All I had was a little backpack with a few changes of underwear, my money, a toothbrush, etc. I brought practically nothing else. When I got over there, people always commented on how light I was traveling, they'd be like "where's your stuff?" And I'd just hold up this bag that was the size of a purse, lol. I've never felt so free.

I came back a few months later to the states but the travel bug was far from gone. I just couldn't go back into any sort of "conventional" life after that so I packed up my car with all my belongings (wasn't much) and left California. I headed east and it was one of the greatest adventures of my life, even better than Asia! I spent some time in Missouri (where I met my boyfriend) and then moved on to North Carolina where I eventually 'settled' (kinda, for now) because it's so beautiful here. My boyfriend ended up coming back here too and living with me and we got a cabin in the mountains and lived there for over a year. It was great fun. We are still living here now and saving up money so we can buy our own fifth wheel rig and truck, and then we are going to be road warriors indefinitely.

In my experience the things in life that seem like the biggest risks have given me the biggest rewards. I had almost no money (maybe $800 total in cash with NO plan) when I left California and by the time I got to NC I only had maybe $200, it was crazy, no plan, nothing. But I ended up barely scraping by and getting a little job for a bit and then life just went on...I can't imagine how much I'd have missed out on had I just stayed in my hometown and been "sensible" about my goals.. blah.

You only live once and it's always better to regret doing something than not doing something. But I've never regretted a thing. :)

dread maintenance to dread loss

Dread Maintenance

Plus no maintenance is easier! And no longer having to do stuff to my hair was part of the reason I got dreads. So far I've done nothing to them, I'm over 2 months in now and they are getting more and more awesome every day. :)

Introduce Yourself

Most of those mainstream shampoos are really toxic. I don't use any shampoo, just the baking soda wash.

Tips tricks and feedback, please?

Dread Maintenance

Hmm... I dunno about the flax gel. It's great for your gut, but that stuff is like cement when trying to clean it off something (when u let it harden in a tupperware or something) so it isn't something I'd personally put on my dreads. I say forget about locking gels and just let them be.

Being a dready vegetarian :P

Dreads and Diets

I'm not a vegetarian and never plan to be but I do eat a lot of dishes that are vegan. One of my favorite things to eat is raw pasta. (I eat high raw) You'll need:

1 big zucchini + raw garlic and onion to taste + italian herbs (rosemary, basil, oregano, whatever u want)+ sea salt + black pepper + a fresh tomato + extra virgin olive oil + water.

Peel the zucchini and cut it into chunks. Then turn the chunks sideways and slice even, thin little pieces, however big you'd like the chunks of "pasta" to be. Get it all chopped and put into a bowl or a tupperware (I use a tupperware, you want something you can cover but a bowl could work).

For the sauce just chop the tomato and throw in the blender along with the garlic, onion, olive oil, salt and herbs. Add a little water for as thin a sauce as you like. Sorry I don't have specific measurements for this stuff, I'm an "instinct" driven chef so I just toss in as much feels right to me. When it comes to making the sauce, just go slow, taste, blend, add more, adding a little bit at a time til it's the right flavor/consistency that you'd like.

When the sauce is saucy to your liking, simply dump it all over the "pasta"... then either leave it out somewhere warm for a few hours and serve, or stick it in the fridge overnight and take it out a few hours before you want to eat it the next day. It's important for it to soak in the sauce for awhile so the pasta gets soft and the sauce develops flavor. You can eat it right away if you want but its much more crunchy and much less pasta-like. The best time I ever ate this stuff was after it sat in my backpack for 3 hours on a hike. It was warm and delicious and almost the same texture as real pasta!

Enjoy! If you like this one I have an alfredo version as well. I have tons of raw food ideas, actually. I've been eating this way over a year now and its' awesome. :)
