Why knot? (pictures at bottom)

Dread Maintenance

So I haven't brushed my hair in nine months and I've been quite kind to my happy locks. Something that is bothering me though is that the front half of my head is not locking up AT ALL, not a tangle, not one knot. A friend of mine had locks for ten years (natural) and I always wondered about the awkward chunks of hair framing her face and assumed she brushed them on purpose, but she recently told me that hers never locked even after ten years :( I only have half a head of locks and I'm getting bummed that it will always be this way...any advice kind friends? I have started and stayed organic through the process but I'm wondering if I should help them along or something...:/

Is paypal safe?

General Questions

I've really been wanting to donate to this site since it has saved me from making MAJOR mistakes with my locks but I have never purchased anything online besides college payments and I'm worried about identity theft so basically I'm asking how safe is it to use paypal? Someone talk me into this decade...;)

New Dreads - Seeking guidance

Dread Maintenance

Most of this has been covered but I'll just reiterate a couple of points.
I hold no contempt towards back combing as many of my friends have back combed. Croquet on the other hand, in cases I've seen, truly stalls your progress.

Rubber bands can leave dents for many days to come, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, a very close friend of mine has had locks for 5 years--I could still point out the denting from keeping his bands in for a month within his first year.

Simply put, wax rots. Think of putting a chunk of wax in an enclosed, sometimes damp, warm space for years on end--it will mold and it will stink. Believe me the smell is foul. Its really awful and once you know the moldy rotting smell you will never forget it.

On the contrary I wash my baby locks about every two days, just last night a dread skeptic caught a whiff of my hair and gathered it up and smelled it again and again haha he must have liked it. Washing is refreshing and oily hairs just slide around on each other and its much harder to knot up. But enough out of me, blessed be your journey <3

How can i mature my dead faster?

Dreading Methods

something I've seen among my friends is that the more work you do to your locks, the longer it takes them to mature. That lock in the picture is ready to be left alone and it will do what it is supposed to do with love and time. :)

General Questions

Its enamel but it isn't eroded, just stained. I did finally get the stains out but I had to use harsh means by borrowing comet from a friend up the street, letting that sit on it for and hour then scrubbing it, not preferable. I think the reason it caused such a problem is that our tub drains slow and so there is standing water for about 20 minutes after showering. I wonder if there are any means of protecting the tub from further problems...its unfortunate for me that no one is familiar with this problem but fortunate for all of you hahah.

General Questions

Thanks for reading :) Ya know the funny thing is I only use Dr. Bronner's, baking soda, rosemary, lavender, and tea tree oils and I am a generally clean person that works indoors (Dillard's.) I use the dr. bronner's as body wash too. But my room mate knows I stained the tub because they left town and when they came home and the tub was gray. So I searched around and talked to some folks finding that Dr. Bronner's and baking soda actually clean stains and a couple of people said that essential oils can stain and eat away the enamel on tubs so that is where I got this info. Anyway that grapefruit idea sounds like it would be nice, does it work well on stains though? I've tried everything today to no resolve and I'm getting a bit concerned that the gray tub is here to stay :/

What would you do with this loop?

Help! Save My Dreads

That's funny, I have a similar loop and it makes for my favorite lock! ;p I would not cut it I think that will make your hair stick out even more, you could try a touch of palm rolling if its bothering you that much, but if I were you I'd try to learn to love it :)

Help and advice please for new dreads I'm sooooo confused!!!!

Dread Maintenance

I disagree I love washing my locks it feels super refreshing! Angel Frye is right in saying you don't need to baby them too much I blow dry mine sometimes, put them in high pony tails, mickey mouse buns, last night I even wore them in high pig tails and someone told me I looked like a hippy baby spice! haha but I didn't mind it was funny :) Don't be nervous its your hair and you have had it your whole life its just more wild and untamed now! that's half the fun :)) Also I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this but essential oils are awesome with the baking soda wash usually I mix a little under a table spoon of baking soda with a squirt of dr. bronners, 8 drops of rosemary essential oil (which helps with dandruff and kills lice), 7 drops of lavendar essential oil (which kills mold spores), and 2-4 drops of tea tree which also helps with dandruff, I put that all in a large cup and fill it with warm water/stir it up and wa la! delightful wash :o) ps; a good friend of mine has had locks for 5 years and he put bands at the roots in his first couple of months, to this day his locks are odd shaped if you know where to look for it, ditch the bands! that might even help with that gap you described. Have fun and enjoy your journey <3

Yeahh i am real nervous for washing :(! i was planning on washing in the morning like first thing but after what you have just said i might actually wait until the evening so i can sleep on it. Sounds better than going out with "toilet hair" hahah!!

i really wish i had done it a different method now i love this site and the help everyone has given me but its made me really regret the crochet method :( Thankfully I've only done it the once and there only 2 days old so I'm hoping not much damage has been done.

Also i was going to make a different discussion thing but i might as well just post it on here. Seen as though i done them myself the sectioning isn't all that great and i have a medium sized bald undreaded scalply bit at the back which I'm really starting to become self conscious about. i really dont want to take any dreads out and re do it (mainly because i dont want the pain) but If i just pin certain dreadlocks over will they eventually grow that direction? or will it get better over time?

The following fact really freaked me out the first three months until I just sucked it up and got used to it: your hair will look fantastic before you wash. You wash and then you're hair looks like crap for the next twelve hours. Seriously. Like you've put your head in the toilet and given yourself a swirly. How to fix? SLEEP on it!!! No joke! The next morning after you've washed your hair you'll want to kiss the mirror because you look so lovely. Sleeping on dreadlocks makes them mature.(Don't ever sleep on wet hair, though, fyi, unless you want mildew and mold in your hair and pillow case.)

Don't baby them too much. Have fun. Let them do their thing and they will portray just how uniquely beautiful you are inside.

Congrats on beginning your journey!
