You could just have stopped doing anything and they would've probably been fine. But the natural journey is awesome

I had the same problem with buildup for a long time. I just put a little bit more baking soda and let it sit for 20-30 minutes instead of 10 and the buildup was gone. Be sure the water hits the scalp with some pressure too.
I just wrote this in another thread so i just copy paste it.

Have you tried to seperate them when they are wet? Doesnt hurt as much.
Nope, dry as hell lol. I need to sleep now, cya later.
Yeah but then i have to order from the us.
If you leave in the ACV without washing it out, could this be the result from doing that? Someone told me you shouldnt wash it out so i did that the first year or so.
Maybe a bit dusty but not excessively. I have washed with the BS and ACV wash all the time.
Spiderweb? Im pretty sure its not spiderweb lol.
It seems like this white thing surrounds the strand and you can scrape it off.
It's definitely not gray hairs. This is something else, if i scrape them they kinda dissolves to some white powder lol.
So i have noticed that in almost all of my mature dreads i have some white strands of hair. The white strands also break very easily. Some of the hairs also looks a bit "furry", i don't know how to describe it.
I tried to take a picture of it but its very hard. I took a picture with a "normal" strand of hair besides one of the white ones.
Do anyone have an idea of what this is?
