shadow here dread welcome

Introduce Yourself

Cool to hear that, trust us, that's the best decission you can take if you don't want to see your dreads smelling bad or just plainly falling appart in just one more year. Just make sure you get rid of all the wax after combing (a non-residue shampoo or the baking soda wash with lemon essential oils + apple cider vinegar rinse would be the best option) and if you want fat dreads take into account that over time, they get as fat as the section of hair used to make them is in the scalp so try not to make your sections too big!

Sea Salt soak/rinse

Dread Maintenance

I'd do the salt water rinse like a couple hours before showering. I don't think you really want salt in your hair for much longer because it has potential of damaging your scalp. Think of a beach day: you swim, relax, swim a little more... and then you head directly to the shower to rinse everything off. This is the same.

Top Secret

Dreading Methods

Yup, I second this. Very few of my original TnR set are "alive" now. Don't panic, it's completely normal especially if your hair is still short. Give it time, and don't TnR again (unless you're sure the undone section is perfectly unknotted hair) because you'll set you back to the beginning. TnR is not an "instant dreads" method, it's more like a "let's set some knots and sections so the beginning step takes less time".

Aika said:

to all those that backcombed and twist and ripped to start off, don't worry about your "dreads" loosening. 75% of my twist and rip dreads came completely undone before they began dreading, and theyre fine now. there's no maintenance that will give you stronger, healthier dreads than if you just left them alone and did no maintenance apart from separating. just let go of the idea that dreads are an instant thing and then you can appreciate the process.

I just found my reason why I don't want to crochet, and it's that I don't want my dreads to look like those in this loctician page: (((WARNING, LOCTICIAN DISASTERS AHEAD))) http://www.rastasmadrid.com/ especially those in the banner. Thin and pointy? Urg, no thanks.

Trust me, you don't want to see the "Fotos" section. For some of them I don't know what's worse, before or after. The ammount of scalp showing is horrible.

Crochet oops!

crochet and dread tools recovery

Also another trick for the BS if you find it very hard to dissolve with your local tap water: use very hot water and start adding and dissolving the BS little by little, not adding more until the previous teaspoon is completely dissolved and there's no powder left in the bottom of the container of your choice. Then let it cool down until it's at a confortable temperature to pour down on your head.

Rip and Tear method maintenance

Dread Maintenance

@Lexz: there's also the most difficult part: DON'T PANIC!!! They will start getting fluffier, they will get looser and some of them will fall appart (especially if your hair is short). Just wait: T&R is not an "instant dreads" method but more a "let's prepare separation and some basic knots so dreads can start forming a little faster"

@Ivan, this video shows the proccess really clear:

though I would skip the rubber bands part because it might create a weak spot (it's not a bad idea to have a more clear idea on how to section the hair, or if several people are working on the same head but remove immediatly after you're finished)

Palm rolling is also a not-so-good idea inherithed from wax users that need to stick everything together with the gunk because waxed hair barely dreads by itself. At best it won't do nothing in natural dreads, and at worst it might put pressure and stress in your scalp, maybe breaking some hairs.

we all shaved or started over dreadheadhq/knottyboy dreads the right way, wonder why?

Dreading Methods

Just joined the site after browsing it for some weeks and I decided to post here first. Yes, I almost fell for DHHQ, or well, more precisely their notion than a lot of shit in your hair is the only way to get dreads, as I supposed their shipping charges to Europe would be horrible so I luckily didn't buy anything at all.

Then I noticed something: their product line. I don't know about English (as it's not my native language, and probably the effect is not the same) but that kind of names and constructions (Dread Butta, Supa Supa Dread Kit, Lock Peppa) sound really stupid when done in Spanish, like a 12 years old trying to be cool talking like a rapper from a bad comedy show.

And then I wondered... "wait, if this stupid page claims they're the only way of getting dreads... no, there has to be something else" and after doing some research on youtube (and diving through tons of people advertising their dread services, yuck) I landed here, and saw that horrible pic of a dread full of white wax residue and that awful black core of SHIT... urgh.

So well, my hair is still really short but I'm going to try natural neglect dreads in the back part. It's being like 3 weeks since the last time a comb went through it and it's still early, but I'm going to be there eventually :)
