New to dreads and I need guidance.

General Questions

You have had the hardest ones to reach done - you could do 1 an evening while sitting on the couch watching tv, if thats what you do. If you need step by step instructions for making some dreads out of synthetic or coloured sheeps wool i can help you. It is so easy to make double ended dreads and just threading them through the top of 1 of your own dreads, they stay there as the're threaded through the root of your own dread and they r easy removed by just pulling and they slide out! If you had some more done on your own hair they would probably fill in nice, as you have layered sections on your hair right to the crown and past, so that alone will fill in the gaps more. I have this exact feeling about my dreads as there is gaps where there is no dreads, i have to really place mine nice if i want to take a pic or they r tied up most of the time to just look half descent.

Dreadlock myths debunked

General Questions

Really - that blows me away that anyone would ask if dreads were undone and re done every time you showered!!!!!

soaring eagle said:

that must take a long time to undo them and redo them everytime you take a shower

hey you you must know where i can score some drugs

you know girls only like guys with short hair clean cut and conservative

you know you'll have to cut them when spiders lay eggs in them

oh ofcourse theres the urban legend that bob marley had 38 undiscovered species of bugs in his dreads when he died (like man that would rather die then lose a toe would ever alow an autopsy)

so what you just put peanutbutter and eggs and toothpaste in your hair and it turns out like that?

Time to the Line. 4.5 Month Update. :p

Member Journals and Timelines

The hair that grows from the roots from now on will be the real thick dread, as the hairs that usually fall out on a daily basis get entangled as the dread grows, something they won't be too thin.Peace.

Hair elastic alternatives?

Dread Accessories

If you can find smone who either knits or crochet, or if you can do either then just do a long strip but about an inch and half wide. I do a stip of either woolen or even hemp and then sew a wooden button which is cut from a branch and 2 holes drilled in, it looks so awsome with the dreads. If i can find the picture of it amongst my 100's of pics i will add it here.

If you r intersted and would like one, just leave me a message and i can post you one, i do the craft and have many colours of wool to choose from.

Had to Cut Off a Dread

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Oh Tara I'm so sorry to hear how you feel, but by the look of your post it sounds like it was a temporary thing, like you say its nearly healed and that was the cause of the itching was the scalp healing, just wait for the rest to heal and then get a clarifying shampoo, but before using this shampoo or any shampoo soak your dreads just like Barrellandy said, then add some conditioner on the parts where you saw the entangled skin flakes, massage this in as much as possiblebetween fingers and thumbsthen get under a shower and rinse and rinse out all the conditioner, the skin flakes will come with it and then wash your dreads AGAIN. Clarifying shampoos are designed to break down organic tissue like dead skin. Also my dreads have done the same where they have grown from the skalp they r thinner too, that is how the real natural dread is going to form.Hope this helps, if you need any help i used to be a hairdresser and know alot about skin conditions and dreads, prefering the natural way is what lead me to leave the salon inviroment. All the best. Peace.

Dread beads

Dread Accessories

Another way is if the hole of the bead is small is to get a darning needle and thread with embroidery thread, wrap the other end of thread around your dread where you want the bead to beand tie a knot, weave needle through end of your dread and then through bead, then slide bead up the thread and the dread. Just cut knot end of thread and pull out. Its a great way for getting smaller things that r not going to go on the dreads easy:)

Fixing crochet dreads

salon and loctician dreads recovery

This is really good advice too :)

Tara C said:

They're nowhere near doomed. But here's the thing: don't crochet them ever again, don't go back to that place, and don't do anything except wash your dreads. And, well, yeah, conditioning them a bit would be good too. The frizz is because of the crocheting, so...people who are pro-crochet will crochet their dreads to make them look neat or to 'fix' the frizz, but that continues the cycle of frizz being formed. No crocheting means the frizz will eventually die down and stay away. It takes time, because your hair needs to loosen up and whatnot, so all you really need is patience. But no, they will be absolutely fine if you stay away from those things :)
