General Talk

first of all, good for you for changing your life. second of all, i don't think people should be labeled either - good or bad. people become attached to labels and they identify with different labels in order to build up their identity and self-worth. when you label someone, it gives them very little room and freedom to change. once you categorize someone, you cease to truly see them for who they are - a person.

so being a hippie is not a "bad" label, and maybe technically you are one, but labels all together are rubbish. each label is a cage to get trapped in.

Top Secret

Dreading Methods

to all those that backcombed and twist and ripped to start off, don't worry about your "dreads" loosening. 75% of my twist and rip dreads came completely undone before they began dreading, and theyre fine now. there's no maintenance that will give you stronger, healthier dreads than if you just left them alone and did no maintenance apart from separating. just let go of the idea that dreads are an instant thing and then you can appreciate the process.

dreadlocks get curly after bs wash HELP!!!

Dread Maintenance

did you tnr or backcomb? how old are they? your hair is going to loosen a lot man. i used tnr and they came out almost completely before they started knotting up. beads help a lot to keep them together and to knot faster. but yea, you gotta expect them to do that. i still have sections of loose hair but the rest knotted up nicely without doing anything to them. don't get discouraged, just understand that it has to happen. :)

reasons not to use a dread kit from those whove used a dreadkit

Dread Products

i dont know why anyone would OPT to use wax...it's disgusting and uncomfortable. it sticks to everything and traps all the dirt and dust that you would normally wash out.

reasons not to use a dread kit from those whove used a dreadkit

i fell for the dreadheadhq starter kit that included rubber bands, backcombing comb, WAX, "dreadlock shampoo" and locking accelerator. the only useful thing in that kit...the spray bottle the locking accelerator came in. everything else is just sitting around somewhere collecting dust. the other day i used the wax to hold some incense. :P i might use it some time on my winter boots to protect them from water damage. point is, it was a waste of money. my mother spent probably 6 hours backcombing my hair (it was very long) and i spent another hour putting all of the wax in it. just thinking about it now makes me really mad. i felt terrible for wasting my mom's time and putting her through all of that hard work. but in the end i removed all of the wax and "dreadlocks", which took another 3 hours or something like that. so...lesson learned. dreadkits = waste of time, money, energy. not just that, but the fact that made dreads undo every day instead of progress was so frustrating and discouraging and made the task of having dreads very daunting. it was such a relief to find out dreads take hardly any effort/maintenance at all.

beware the traps of commercial dreadkits and websites!!
