Retwisting Really Isn't Necessary

General Talk

Hi hi!

I have been dreading for 4 months and 2 weeks and I have done lots of trial and error type things with my locks. My hair started out being twisted into spiral curls about once a week until I got tired of doing it and decided that I wanted dreads instead. (I had been fighting this for years) I started noticing some knotting in the first month and then it went crazy and took off form there. I then started to maintain them by re-twisting them (against my better judgement) about once every 3 weeks. I didn't to any visible damage to my locks, although I felt like I had.

Re-twisting isn't necessary because I have noticed in the past few weeks (maybe the last month or so) that my locks are pretty much fully dreaded(without the aid of my hands). There is a tiny bit(about an inch or two) around the very tips that is still lose but I'm giving it time to lock up on its own. I actually wash my hair with regular shampoo (well "regular" meaning the residue free kind) and I can scrub away at my scalp without worry of my dreads coming undone. I actually kind of like the "wild" look thy have and the compliments have just been flowing by the truckloads (which makes me feel good about myself haha!)

I think its a bit comical how all the advise SE gives that we all decide what will and wont work for us and I have realized that re-twisting really isn't necessary. Thanks for reading!

PS. Pics to come soon! my dreadies have come so far! :))

dread balls

General Questions

I do it too.. The dready hairballs are sometimes cumbersome and most of mine come out on their own when I am separating anyways.. I'd say its fine if they are bothering you, I wouldn't get crazy and rip all the ones you purposely go looking for though..

Well depending where you would want to live the price of the property will vary. I am in school right now to become a nurse and when I am done, I would like to be a traveling Nurse. So, if you are at all interested, I would love to join your commune if you do ever create it and provide health care if necessary.. Also, I think this is a lovely idea and I really wold like to be a part of it :))))

touching your hair

Introduce Yourself

I love it too.. I like to educate people on the methods of locking and to make them knowledgeable without sounding like some crazed girl who is a know-it-all.. Just this past week several people have reached to touch my locks and I lean in and embrace it.. The love it and I like to make people happy so yeah. :))

how to make dreadlocks

Dreading Methods

Very inspirational.. The day I decided to dread my hair was the day that i threw away all my hair care mixes, sprays, gels, mouse, hair pomade.. The list goes on.. you name it, I had it under my sink. The only brush and comb that are still lingering in the house are the ones my mother uses (she doesn't have dreads) and my dad doesn't need them because he is bald. lol, Dreading the right way is one of my many accomplishments and I am happy I chose the route with little to no maintenance.. Its too much of a hassle and I don't really care to be bothered with it. Besides that, I have heard and seen nothing but horror stories from those that have used wax or crocheted (first hand from family members) Just take the easy way and invest some time, love, and patience and your dreadies will be so rewarding. I just know it. :))))

Indeed.. I like to spread the word with people about dreading. I can also tell now the people that used wax to dread their hair.. It is blatantly obvious because they look so jagged and heavy. I'm not sure how the guy I talked to did his because his hair was pretty short and just starting out, but I do love to hear dready hair stories :)

Friendly Dreadlock Encounters

dreadlockssite appreciation

Sooooo today my brother and I were at best buy in Buford GA, (he was browsing around for gadgets) and I met back up with him a little later in the music section.

As I was walking toward him, this 16-18 year old kid walks up to me and starts bombarding me with questions.

Hey there! I noticed you had dreads!
Me: Yeah they were 3 months old on the 1st.
Him: Im dreading as well!(flips off his Fedora)
Me: Thats awesome! How long have you been dreading?
Him: About a month now.
Me: Thats whats up!

He then asked me if I was mixed and I said no that I am just light skinned. And he asked me if I was a part of a facebook community about dreads, (cant really remember what he called it.)

I told him about Dreadlockssite and what a wonderful place it was full of wonderful people and that he should check us out.

Long story short (I know its too late for that) it made my day to meet a fellow dready who wasnt too scared to ask me about my dreads. Not to mention that him saying he liked my dreads when sometimes I dont even feel like they do yet.. lol

Just wanted to share that.. :)
